My Top 15 Choices for August TV

By  |

Summer will be coming to a close soon, as hard as that is to believe, but there are plenty of programming options to distract from that inevitability.

Our full August TV calendar went live yesterday and you can see it here. Out of that list, I’ve picked my top 15 choices for the month:

NEW DRAMAS

The following new dramas will debut in August:

Chief of War on August 1 on Apple TV+. Jason Momoa stars in this period piece drama, set in the 18th century, as Hawaiian warrior Ka’iana before Western colonization of the islands.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood on Starz on August 8 at 8 PM. The prequel series will focus on the parents of Outlander characters Jamie and Claire from the war-torn battlefields of WWI to the sweeping Highlands of 18th century Scotland.

Butterfly on Amazon Prime on August 13. Losst star Daniel Dae Kim will star as David Jung, a highly unpredictable former US intelligence operative living in South Korea, whose life is blown to pieces when the consequences of an impossible decision from his past come back to haunt him.

The Rainmaker on the USA Network on August 15 at 10 PM. Based on the best-selling John Grisham novel, Rudy Baylor, fresh out of law school, goes head-to-head with courtroom lion Leo Drummond (John Slattery from Mad Men) as well as his law school girlfriend, Sarah (Madison Iseman from the new Jumanji film reboots). Rudy, along with his boss, Bruiser, and her disheveled paralegal, Deck, uncover two connected conspiracies surrounding the mysterious death of their client’s son.

MOVIES AND MORE MOVIES

Out of the dozen new made-for-TV movies that will debut in August, the following are my top picks:

My Oxford Year on August 1 on Netflix. The streamer’s leading lady Sofia Carson and Queen Charlotte alum Corey Mylchreest star in this rom-com about an ambitious young American woman, who sets out for the UK and the University of Oxford to fulfill a childhood dream, but her life goes completely off track when she meets a charming and clever local, who profoundly alters both of their lives.

The new Hallmark Channel 3-part movie Providence Falls: Chance of a Lifetime, Providence Falls: An Impossible Promise and Providence Falls: Thief of Fate will debut on August 2, August 9 and August 16 at 8 PM respectively. Katie Stevens, Lachlan Quarmby and Evan Roderick star in this time-traveling rom-com franchise.

The Map That Leads to You on Amazon Prime on August 20, starring Madelyn Cline and Riverdale hunk KJ Apa in a rom-com set during a European adventure.

The Thursday Murder Club on August 28 on Netflix. Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie play four irrepressible retirees who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun.

DRAMAS COMING TO AN END

The series finale of Resident Alien will air on August 8 at 10 PM on Syfy and the USA Network; and, on The Gilded Age on HBO on August 10 at 9 PM.

RETURNING DRAMAS

Lastly, the following dramas will be back with new seasons:

Wednesday on August 6 on Netflix
Upload on Amazon Prime on August 25
My Life With the Walter Boys on Netflix on August 28
