Do You Remember: 10 Things I Hate About You (The TV Series)

By  |

Just a little over 25 years ago, the box office movie 10 Things I Hate About You was released in movie theatres, starring then relative unknowns Julia Stiles and the late Heath Ledger as well as Joseph Gordon-Leavitt, David Krumholtz, Larisa Oleynik and Gabrielle Union as high school students at Padua High School as well as Larry Miller, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, Allison Janney and David Leisure as the few adults in the entire production.

Ten years after the movie came out, ABC Family (now Freeform) debuted a small screen adaptation. The TV version of 10 Things I Hate About You debuted on July 7, 2009.

Based on William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” the TV series focused on the Stratford sisters, Kat (Lindsey Shaw, who went on to star in the original Pretty Little Liars) and Bianca (Meaghan Martin), who had just moved from Ohio to California. They have very different goals as they start at their new school – Padua High. It is clear that one sister wants to stand out and the other just wants to fit in. Kat is a cool, smart, strong-willed, forthright feminist who is looking to save the world and get out of school as fast as she can. When she meets the intense Patrick Verona (Ethan Peck, best known for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and grandson of the late great Gregory Peck), sparks begin to fly. Meanwhile, Bianca is a social butterfly whose main goal is to be popular, but when the head cheerleader makes her the mascot, she realizes she has a long way to go. As they start a bumpy year at Padua High, Kat and Bianca attempt to navigate the popular crowd, boys, and their over-protective dad (Larry Miller, who appeared as the Stratford dad in the original movie).

The series was created by Carter Covington, a self-professed fan of the film, who has gone on to work on the reboot of Charmed, Faking It, Hart of Dixie and Greek. Besides having Larry Miller from the original film as part of the cast, Gil Junger, who directed the original film, directed the pilot episode of the TV series and served as a series consultant and Richard Gibbs, who was credited for the original music, composed the theme music for the pilot episode.

Other cast members of the TV series included Nicholas Braun from Succession, Dana Davis, Chris Zykla, Jolene Purdy, who will soon be seen alongside Kevin Bacon in new horror-thriller streaming series The Bondsman, Allie Gonino and Popular alum Leslie Grossman.

Among the guest stars of the short-lived series were Tiffany Hines, who went on to appear in Bones, Hit the Floor and the reboot of Magnum P.I.; Dot-Marie Jones, who went on to appear in the latter part of Glee as well as one-time guest stars Wendi McLendon-Covey, who went on to star in The Goldbergs and is now starring in St. Denis Medical; Meagan Tandy, who went on to Teen Wolf and Batwoman; Gina Rodriguez from Jane the Virgin and Will Trent and LaMonica Garrett from The Last Ship, Lioness and 1883.

While the TV series performed fairly well as far as the critics were concerned, the ratings did not reflect what the cable network wanted at the time, garnering 1.6 million viewers or less each week. The show was cancelled in April by ABC Family and aired its final episode on May 24, 2010.
