What to Rewatch Online: Haven
The supernatural TV series Haven, based loosely on the Stephen King novel “The Colorado Kid,” made its debut on Syfy on July 9, 2010.
The show primarily dealt with strange events in the fictional town of Haven, Maine, focusing on a town of characters who struggled with supernatural afflictions. The series was created by writing partners Jim Dunn and Sam Ernst.
The series starred Emily Rose as FBI Special Agent Audrey Parker who was dispatched to the small town of Haven on a routine case. But she soon found herself becoming increasingly involved in the return of “The Troubles,” a plague of supernatural afflictions that had occurred in the town at least twice before. Audrey had an openness to the possisibility of the paranormal and even found a personal link in Haven that might lead to the mother she never knew.
Over time, Audrey quit the FBI and joined the Haven Police Department, working alongside Nathan. For a time they had a working relationship but that soon turned into an on-again, off-again romantic relationship.
Audrey was also more than meets the eye, as she ended up learning she had been other people in her past lives, including characters named Sarah Vernon, Lucy Ripley and Mara.
In fact, she eventually learned that in her past life she was actually the mother of James Cogan (aka The Colorado Kid), had a complicated history with Duke and even William, the antagonist of seasons four and five (more on some of these characters below).
The other major cast members, included:
Lucas Bryant, who played Nathan Wuornos, a police detective with the Haven Police Department. He had a rare disorder known as Idiopathic Neuropathy, which meant he could not experience tactile sensations.
Eric Balfour, who played Duke Crocker, the owner of the waterfront bar Grey Gull as well as the owner of the fishing boat Cape Rouge. His family was cursed with being able to acquire – short-term only – superhuman strength after absorbing the blood of any person who was “Troubled.”
Adam “Edge” Copeland [who came on as a series regular later in the show’s run], who played Dwight Hendrickson, a former soldier in Afghanistan. He was a confidant to Nathan’s father [more on him further down] and helped keep certain suspicious supernatural activity in the town under wraps. He was literally a bullet magnet, as that was his “Trouble.”
Just some of the recurring cast included:
Nicholas Campbell as Garland Wuornos, the sheriff of Haven (until his passing) and adoptive father of Nathan Wuornos;
Richard Donat as Vince Teagues
John Dunsworth as Dave Teagues
Jason Priestly as Chris Brody
Dorian Missick as Tommy Bowen
Steve Lund as James Cogan (aka The Colorado Kid)
Colin Ferguson as William
Rossif Sutherland as Henry
William Shatner as Croatoan
Some of the show’s guest stars included:
Nicola Correia-Damude (Shadowhunters and Burden of Truth)
Claudia Black (Farscape)
Melanie Scrofano (Wynonna Earp)
Laura Vandervoort (Smallville and Bitten)
Peter MacNeill (Good Witch and Moonshine)
Dylan Neal (Cedar Cove and Gourmet Detective movie franchise)
Joe Dinicol (Arrow)
Kristin Booth (Signed, Sealed, Delivered movie and TV series franchise)
Jefferson Brown (The Way Home and When Hope Calls)
Tahmoh Penikett (Battlestar Galactica)
Kandyse McClure (Virgin River)
While the series was a fan favorite, the reviews by critics were mixed. In fact, Rotten Tomatoes gave the first season a somewhat harsh review by stating, “It benefits from an intriguing setting and a strong lead in Emily Rose, but otherwise, Haven is a derivative supernatural crime procedural.” [OUCH!]
The series consisted of 78 episodes and was cancelled by Syfy in August of 2015 before coming to its inevitable end on the cable network on December 17, 2015 after five seasons on TV.
