My Top Choices for January TV

By  |

It’s hard to believe that it will be 2025 tonight at midnight. It’s another year under our belts and a lot of uncertainty ahead.

But in the world of TV, we can always count on new dramas and new made-for-TV movies to debut on TV and streaming and, given the time of the TV season, for current dramas to return for the remainder of their seasons.

With those thoughts in mind, here is my list of the programming options set to air throughout January that I am most interested in watching.

NEW DRAMAS

The new FOX medical drama Doc will debut on January 7 at 9 PM. Molly Parker from Deadwood and Lost in Space stars as Dr. Amy Elias, Chief of Internal and Family Medicine at Westside Hospital in Minneapolis. After a brain injury erases the last eight years of her life, Amy must navigate an unfamiliar world where she has no recollection of patients she’s treated, colleagues she’s crossed, the soulmate she divorced, the man she now loves and the tragedy that caused her to push everyone away. Scott Wolf from Party of Five co-stars.

Noah Wyle is back in the new medical drama The Pitt, which is set to debut on MAX on January 9. The series will focus on the daily lives of healthcare professionals in a Pittsburgh hospital as they juggle personal crises, workplace politics, and the emotional toll of treating critically ill patients, revealing the resilience required in their noble calling.

Pretty Little Liars alum Troian Bellisario will star in the new police drama On Call that will also debut on January 9 on Amazon Prime. The series follows a pair of police officers on patrol as they respond to a new radio call, arriving on the scene to resolve incidents. ER alum Eriq La Salle will co-star as will scandal-riddled Lori Loughlin, which would be the one reason I wouldn’t want to watch the show, but I’ll give it a chance regardless.

Hunky Morris Chestnut will be back on the small screen in the new CBS drama Watson, which will debut on January 26 at 10 PM. The series takes place six months after the death of the titular character’s friend and partner Sherlock Holmes at the hands of Moriarty.

The new drama Paradise will debut its first three episodes on Hulu on January 28. The series will be set in a serene community inhabited by some of the world’s most prominent individuals; but this tranquility explodes when a shocking murder occurs and a high-stakes investigation unfolds. The best part about this new series is the cast, which includes This Is Us alum Sterling K. Brown, hunky James Marsden, Person of Interest alum Sarah Shahi and Veronica Mars regular Percy Daggs IV.

RETURNING DRAMAS

Then there are the dramas that will be premiering their new seasons starting in January, including the following:

The Way Home on the Hallmark Channel on January 3 at 9 PM;
Will Trent and The Rookie on ABC on January 7 at 8 PM and 10 PM (respectively); and,
The Night Agent on Netflix on January 23,

DRAMAS COMING TO AN END

There are two dramas that will be coming to an end in January, and they include:

Outlander on Starz on January 17 at 8 PM; and,
Brilliant Minds on NBC on January 6, airing its final two episodes of its debut season at 9 and 10 PM.

RETURNING WITH NEW EPISODES

With the holidays nearly behind us, the major networks will be getting back to “normal” airing new episodes of their current primetime line-up. And those returning shows that I am eager to see more of include:

The Irrational on NBC on January 7 at 10 PM;
High Potential on ABC on January 7 at 9 PM;
Found on NBC on January 16 at 10 PM;
9-1-1: Lone Star on FOX at 8 PM on January 20;
NCIS and NCIS: Origins on CBS on January 27 at 9 and 10 PM (respectively);
Matlock on CBS on January 30 at 9 PM; and,
Fire Country on CBS on January 31 at 9 PM.

JANUARY MOVIES

Out of the 10 made-for-TV movies that are set to debut in January, there is really only one that I am excited to see and that is the Netflix spy flick Back in Action that is set to debut on January 17, starring Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx as former CIA spies Emily and Matt, who are pulled back into espionage after their secret identities are exposed. The ensemble cast includes the one and only Glenn Close, Early Edition alum Kyle Chandler, Ridley star Andrew Scott, Tom Brittney from Grantchester and Fola Evans-Akingbola from The Night Agent.

Our January TV calendar went live this weekend and it can be found here.
