Do You Remember: Kevin (Probably) Saves the World
On October 3, 2017, a new fantasy comedy-drama debuted on ABC. That series was called Kevin (Probably) Saves the World. It was created and executive produced by Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, who up until that time had worked on shows like Reaper, Terra Nova and Agent Carter and more recently are the executive producers and showrunners on Gen V over on Amazon.
Kevin (Probably) Saves the World starred Jason Ritter – who is currently starring alongside Kathy Bates in the “reboot” of Matlock on CBS and JoAnna Garcia Swisher – who is currently the star of the Netflix series Sweet Magnolias.
Kevin Finn (Ritter) was a down-on-his-luck man who survived a suicide attempt and then moved in with his twin sister Amy Cabrera (Garcia Swisher), an engineer and professor at the local college and Amy’s teenage daughter Reese (Chloe East).
Shortly after moving in with Amy and Reese, Kevin encountered a celestial being named Yvette (Kimberely Hebert Gregory), who claimed that God had tasked Kevin with saving the world, sending Yvette to guide and protect him.
[You can think of the show as an avante garde combination of Touched By An Angel and Joan of Arcadia.]
At first, Kevin was the only one who could see and hear Yvette, so his conversations appeared to be hallucinations to those around him. Kevin had to perform good deeds to build up his spiritual powers, forcing him to become a better person.
Other members of the main cast included India de Beaufort (the reboot of Night Court) as Kristin Allen, Kevin’s ex-girlfriend, Angel alum J. August Richards as Nathan Purcell, the sheriff deputy and Dustin Ybarra as Tyler Medina, Kevin’s friend.
Some of the recurring cast members included Lesley Boone, Will Sasso and Brandon Quinn while some of the guest stars included perennial actor Currie Graham, Rhenzy Feliz (who recently appeared in HBO’s The Penguin), Enver Gjokaj (most recently in NCIS: Hawai’i) and Tyler Labine (recently from New Amsterdam).
The series was originally to be called The Gospel of Kevin, but was changed due to the fact the show was not “overtly religious.” It was given a 16-episode full season order, all of which actually aired, garnering the show an average of 2.7 million viewers during its short run.
Interestingly, actress-comedienne Cristela Alonzo played the heaven-sent entity in the original pilot, but was replaced by Hebert Gregory after the show was picked up for its one and only season.
With only 16 episodes under its belt, Kevin (Probably) Saves the World was canceled by ABC on May 11, 2018.
