My Top Choices for September TV

By  |

It’s hard to believe that it’s nearly time for Fall TV on the major networks. To be honest it feels like it was just springtime not that long ago and now summer is nearly over.

And with the fact that we no longer have to deal with any strikes that are impacting productions, TV viewers have lots to look forward to this fall.

Out of a very long list of returning dramas, new shows to watch, some documentaries and made-for-TV movies, there is a LOT of watch on TV and streaming over the course of September. In fact, my list for this coming month is actually longer than any of my other months this year.

First let’s take a look at the new dramas that will be debuting that I am most interested in watching:

The Chicken Sisters on September 10 on Hallmark+ (formerly Hallmark Movies Now). With legendary actress Margo Martindale as the Narrator, this new family drama is dipped in southern charm, served up with a saucy side of romance. The setting is the fictional town of Merinac, where a generations-old rift between dueling fried chicken restaurants – Mimi’s and Frannie’s – has left the founders’ families fractured and the locals taking sides. When the popular cooking competition show Ultimate Kitchen Clash comes to town, it could be the recipe for ending this feud once and for all. But things are fixing to heat up both inside and outside of the kitchen as the reality show spotlight causes sparks to fly as secrets are spilled and feathers get ruffled.

High Potential on September 17 on ABC at 10 PM. Based on the popular French series, this crime procedural will star Kaitlin Olson as Morgan, a single mom with an exceptional mind whose unconventional knack for solving crimes leads to an unusual and unstoppable partnership with a by-the-book seasoned detective (Daniel Sunjata.) The series also stars Javicia Leslie, Judy Reyes, Deniz Akdeniz and Garret Dillahunt.

Agatha All Along on September 18 on Disney+. The infamous Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) finds herself down and out of power after a suspicious goth Teen (Joe Locke) helps break her free from a distorted spell.

Matlock on September 22 on CBS at 8 PM. The series follows Madeline “Matty” Matlock (the one and only Kathy Bates) [who is not related to the original TV character of Ben Matlock] as she rejoins the work force at a prestigious law firm, where she uses her wily tactics to win cases and expose wrongdoing.

Brilliant Minds on September 23 on NBC at 10 PM. Inspired by the extraordinary life and work of world-famous author and physician Oliver Sacks, the series follows a revolutionary, larger-than-life neurologist (Zachary Quinto) and his team of interns as they explore the last great frontier – the human mind – while grappling with their own relationships and mental health.

Murder In a Small Town on September 24 on FOX at 8 PM. Based on the Edgar Award-winning book series by novelist L.R. Wright, Rossif Sutherland stars as Karl Alberg, who moves to a quiet coastal town to soothe a psyche that has been battered by big-city police work. But this gentle paradise has more than its share of secrets, and Karl will need to call upon all the skills that made him a world-class detective in solving the murders that, even in this seemingly idyllic setting, continue to wash up on his shore. Kristin Kreuk stars as Cassandra, a local librarian who becomes Alberg’s muse, foil and romantic interest.

Doctor Odyssey on September 26 on ABC at 9 PM. This high-octane procedural stars Joshua Jackson as Dr. Max Bankman, a Connecticut physician who accepts the position of ship’s doctor for a luxury cruise ship where the staff works hard and plays harder. It’s all hands on deck as Max and his small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore. The cast includes Don Johnson as Captain Robert Massey, Hamilton alum Phillipa Soo as nurse practitioner Avery Morgan and Sean Teale as registered nurse Tristan Silva.

Then there are the made-for-TV movies, including:

His & Hers on Hallmark Channel on September 7 at 8 PM, starring Lacey Chabert and Brennan Elliott in their 10th movie playing married high-powered lawyers.

Uglies on Netflix on September 13, starring Joey King and Laverne Cox. Based on the novel by author Scott Westerfield, the movie centers around a future post-apocalyptic dystopian society in which a compulsory operation wipes out physical differences and makes everyone pretty.

His Three Daughters on September 20 on Netflix. Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen and Carrie Coon star as three estranged sisters who converge in a New York apartment to care for their ailing father and try to mend their own broken relationship with one another.

Then there are a few other programs that I really want to check out too:

Part 2 of season four of Emily in Paris on September 12 on Netflix.
The series finale of Snowpiercer on September 22 on AMC at 9 PM.
9-1-1: Lone Star on September 23 on FOX at 8 PM.

And lastly, I cannot wait to see if a certain Republican nominee will actually show up to the scheduled Presidential Debate on September 10 on ABC at 9 PM with Vice President Kamala Harris, especially considering the former has been complaining about it on social media lately.
