My Top Choices for June TV

By  |

Can you believe that summer is nearly here?

On June 20, summer begins this year, and how quickly the year has progressed.

And just like every month before, there are plenty of viewing options for the discerning, or not so discerning, TV watcher, ranging from new or returning dramas, specials and movies.

The following are my top 12 choices for the month of June:

SMALL SCREEN MOVIES

Red-hot actor Glen Powell [you’ve seen him in Hidden Figures, Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You] will star in the upcoming Netflix movie Hit Man, which will debut on June 7. He will play a mild-mannered professor who moonlights as a fake hit man in police stings, but when he falls for a potential client (Adria Arjona, the new real-life girlfriend of Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa), trouble ensues.

Then there is Dark Angel alum herself Jessica Alba in what I’m describing as a female-themed Walking Tall movie, also on Netflix. Trigger Warning debuts on June 21 with Alba playing Special Forces commando Parker (Jessica Alba) who is on active duty overseas when she gets called back to her hometown with the tragic news that her father has suddenly died. Now the owner of the family bar, she reconnects with her former boyfriend, who is now the sheriff, his hot-tempered brother and their powerful father Senator Swann (Brat packer himself Anthony Michael Hall), as she looks to understand what actually happened to her dad. Her search for answers quickly goes south, finding herself at odds with a violent gang running rampant in her hometown. Unsure of who she can truly trust, Parker draws on her commando training and proves herself a force to be reckoned with as she hunts down the truth and attempts to right what has gone wrong with the help of her covert ops partner and hacker and a connected local dealer.

Then there is the Apple TV+ movie Fancy Dance, set to debut on June 28, that stars Oscar-nominee Lily Gladstone as Jax, who has been caring for her teenage-niece Roki since her sister’s disappearance. They scrap by on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma, spending every spare minute trying to find her missing sister while also helping Roki prepare for an upcoming powwow. At the risk of Jax losing custody to Roki’s grandfather, the pair hit the road and scour the backcountry to track down Roki’s mother in time for the powwow. What begins as a search gradually turns into a far deeper investigation into the complexities and contradictions of Indigenous women moving through a colonized world while at the mercy of a failed justice system.

RETURNING AND ENDING DRAMAS

The post-apocalyptic series Sweet Tooth will return for its third and final season on Netflix on June 6.

The much-anticipated second part of season three of Bridgerton will air on June 13 on Netflix.

Meanwhile, on June 10 the finale of Harry Wild, the detective series starring Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman star Jane Seymour, will air at 9 PM on BBC America.

Then, The Boys will be back for its fourth season on Amazon Prime on June 13, airing the first three episodes that day.

SPECIALS

I typically don’t watch news specials or documentaries as the subject matter typically doesn’t interest in; but in June that is not the case, as there will be two different spotlights on Canadian singer Celine Dion, who announced in December of 2022 that she had been diagnosed with the rare neurologic disorder Stiff Person Syndrome.

On June 11, NBC journalist Hoda Kotb will interview the legendary singer as part of an exclusive NBC News special set to air at 10 PM. This will be Dion’s first TV interview since her diagnosis.

There will also be the I Am: Celine Dion documentary set to air on Amazon Prime on June 25 that will take a behind-the-scenes look at her struggle with stiff person syndrome.

The other documentary will air on Hulu on June 13. Brats will be an ABC News Special directed by Andrew McCarthy, focusing on the members of the 1980’s “Brat Pack” of which McCarthy was a member because of movies like St. Elmo’s Fire and The Breakfast Club. This special will focus on the impact that moniker and the frenzy that ensued had on the young actors who were part of that label.

NEW DRAMAS

From 2013 to 2017, Orphan Black aired on BBC America, becoming an instant hit with viewers and making Tatiana Maslany an overnight star. This time around, AMC and AMC+ will be the home of the sequel series Orphan Black: Echoes, debuting on June 23. The series will follow a group of women as they weave their way into each other’s lives and embark on a thrilling journey, unravelling the mystery of their identity and uncovering a wrenching story of love and betrayal. Krysten Ritter (Jennifer Jones herself) plays the lead role of Lucy.

Lastly, the period piece drama My Lady Jane will debut on Amazon Prime on June 27. The series is a quick-witted reimagining of Lady Jane Grey, known as the Nine Days’ Queen, who was executed as a teenager in 1554; but in this version avoids the executioner’s axe and has a fun and fulfilling life, full of romance and adventure.

Make sure to check out our June TV calendar, which will go live shortly, and let us know what you’re most looking forward to watching throughout June.
