Do You Remember: Awake

By  |

The police procedural with a fantasy-thriller twist Awake aired for only one season. It debuted on NBC on March 1, 2012. The series was created by Kyle Killen, who had created the short-lived drama Lone Star the season before, and has since written the 2011 Mel Gibson movie The Beaver and was the showrunner and executive producer on the Halo series.

Awake starred Jason Isaacs from the Harry Potter franchise and the recent mini-series Archie – about legendary screen star Cary Grant. Isaacs played Michael Britten, an LAPD Detective, who, in the pilot episode, was involved in a serious car accident with his wife Hannah (Laura Allen from Terriers and The 4400) and their son Rex (Dylan Minnette from Saving Grace and 13 Reasons Why).

After the accident, though, Michael found himself switching between two “realities” whenever he went to bed—one in which Hannah was killed and one in which Rex died instead—and Michael was unable to determine which reality was true. But, he used details from each reality to solve cases in the other.

To help determine which reality was which, Michael wore a red wristband in the first reality, and the color grading of those scenes were warm tones, while Michael wore a green wristband in the second reality, and the color grading of those scenes were cool tones.

Michael also had different therapists between the two realities: Dr. Jonathan Lee (BD Wong from the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World franchise and The Girls on the Bus) in the “red reality” and Dr. Judith Evans (Cherry Jones from 24 and Transparent) in the “green reality.”

Additionally, Michael had different partners at work between the two realities: in the first reality he worked with his long-time partner Detective Isaiah “Bird” Freeman (Steve Harris from The Practice and BMF) while in the other reality he was assigned to work with Detective Efrem Vega (Wilmer Valderrama from NCIS and That 70’s Show).

Laura Innes (ER)
Kevin Weisman (Alias)
Bailey Chase (Longmire)
Megan Dodds (Ever After)

The series received hot and cold reviews from critics and fans alike with Isaacs’ performance garnering praise, but despite high ambitions the pilot episode was considered slow and drowsy. The show’s ratings were low throughout its short run. The pilot episode started strong, but fell by two million viewers, averaging out to 4.8 million viewers during the show’s short run.
