My Top Choices for April TV

By  |

While there are a lot of TV viewing options throughout the month in April, both on network TV and streaming, along with some box office movies that will be making their small screen debut – my top choices list only amount to 11.

First let’s take a look at a couple of shows that will be coming to an end next month:

* Resident Alien on Syfy on April 3 at 10 PM
* The New Look on Apple TV+ also on April 3

Then there are two new dramas that will debuting:

Sight Unseen on CW on April 3 at 9 PM. The show follows Tess Avery (relative newcomer Dolly Lewis), a top homicide detective who is forced to quit the job she loves after an incident in the field nearly results in her partner, Jake Campbell (Daniel Gillies), being killed, leading to her ultimately being diagnosed as clinically blind. Haunted by the cases she left behind and reluctant to accept help, or even her own diagnosis, Tess turns to an assistance app to connect with a professional seeing-eye guide 3,000 miles away. An unorthodox partner in Tess’ ear, Sunny Patel (Agam Darshi), guides her via a micro-camera, allowing Tess to continue doing what she does best: solving cases. An agoraphobic who leaves her apartment only through the eyes of her clients, Sunny is also hiding a secret of her own – a violent event from her past she hopes to one day solve. Steering Tess through life’s obstacles and crimes – the duo challenge preconceptions about ability, trust, and where to draw the line. Inspired by one of the series co-creators’ recurring experiences with sight loss, Tess and Sunny bring a fresh perspective and unexpected thrills to the crime solving genre.

Franklin, the period piece drama, on Apple TV+ on April 12. Michael Douglas stars as Benjamin Franklin, during the time of his life when he makes the greatest gamble of his career, embarking on a secret mission to France. At age 70, without any diplomatic training, Franklin convinced an absolute monarchy to underwrite America’s experiment in democracy. By virtue of his fame, charisma and ingenuity, Franklin outmaneuvered British spies, French informers and hostile colleagues to engineer the Franco-American alliance of 1778 and the peace treaty with England in 1783. The eight-year French mission stands as Franklin’s most vital service to his country, without which America could not have won the Revolution. Diplomats and historians still regard it as the greatest single tour of duty by an ambassador in our nation’s history.

As for the box office movies that will make their small screen debut, there are the following:

* Wish on Disney+ on April 3, featuring voices by Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, Firefly alum and Resident Alien star Alan Tudyk and Star Trek star Chris Pine
* Anyone But You, the R-rated rom-com that has been breaking records all over the globe that stars Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell on Netflix on April 23

Out of the half-dozen made-for-TV movies that will debut on network TV, the following are the few that I will be watching mainly because of the cast:

* Curious Caterer Mysteries: Foiled Plans on April 26 at 9 PM on Hallmark Mystery, finding Nikki DeLoach and Andrew Walker reprising their roles
* Branching Out on Hallmark Channel on April 27 at 8 PM, starring Grey’s Anatomy and Everwood alum Sarah Drew.

Then there’s this one new streaming feature film that I am curious to see:

The Greatest Hits on Hulu on April 12 that stars upcoming Superman star David Corenswet and Bohemian Rhapsody star Lucy Bonyton and The Umbrella Acadey alu Justin H. Min. Harriet (Boynton) finds art imitating life when she discovers certain songs can transport her back in time – literally. While she relives the past through romantic memories of her former boyfriend (Corenswet), her time travelling collides with a burgeoning new love interest in the present (Min). As she takes her journey through the hypnotic connection between music and memory, she wonders – even if she could change the past, should she?

And, lastly the third and final season of Alex Rider will air on Amazon Freevee on April 5 and the 1000th episode of the NCIS franchise will air as an episode of NCIS on April 15 at 9 PM.

Our full April calendar, featuring dramas, movies and specials, will go live in a few days. Please make sure to check it out and let us know what you’re looking forward to watching next month.
