My Top Choices for January TV

By  |

With the new year nearly upon us and the entertainment industry back at work thanks to the strikes being at an end, there are plenty of TV shows getting ready to come back for the rest of their season, new shows set to debut, more made-for-TV movies to play out and much more throughout the month of January.

The following are the new dramas that I am most anxious to watch:

Harlan Coben’s Fool Me Once on Netflix on January 1. The series stars Richard Armitage, and that says it all, but here is the logline for those who want more details: When ex-soldier Maya (Michelle Keegan) sees her murdered husband (Armitage) on a secret nanny cam, she uncovers a deadly conspiracy that stretches deep into the past.

The Brothers Sun on Netflix on January 4 stars Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh as the mother of two very different sons, one a triad member and the other an oblivious younger brother.

Echo on Disney+ on January 9. Alaqua Cox portrays Maya Lopez, who is pursued by Wilson Fisk’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) criminal empire. When the journey brings her home, she must confront her own family and legacy.

Belgravia: The Next Chapter on MGM+ on January 14 at 9 PM. This sequel series tells the love story of Frederick Trenchard, the third Lord Trenchard, and his new love interest, Clara Dunn, who is a newcomer to London society. Unaware that his birth was the product of an affair between his mother Susan and the scoundrel John Bellasis, a troubled childhood has left Frederick deeply insecure, which challenges his courtship of, and marriage to, Clara.

Wild Cards on The CW at 8 PM on January 17 stars Grey’s Anatomy hunk Giacomo Gianniotti as a demoted detective who has begrudgingly spent the last year on the maritime unit, while Max Mitchell (Riverdale’s Vanessa Morgan) has been living a transient life elaborately scamming everyone she meets. But while arrested and being held at the station, Max ends up helping Ellis solve a local crime. The two are offered the opportunity to redeem themselves – Ellis needs to get back to his detective post and Max needs to stay out of jail. The catch? They have to work together, each using their unique skills to solve crimes.

Masters of the Air on Apple TV+ on January 26. This period piece drama, from executive producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, follows the true story of an American bomber group in World War II and includes among its cast Austin Butler (Elvis), Callum Turner (Fantastic Beasts and The Boys in the Boat), Isabel May (1883) and Ncuti Gatwa (the new Doctor on Doctor Who).

The following are the dramas that will be returning for new seasons that I really want to see:

Hudson & Rex on UP Faith & Family on January 4
Miss Scarlet & the Duke on PBS on January 7 at 8 PM
Skymed on Paramount+ on January 11
The Way Home on the Hallmark Channel on January 21 at 9 PM

Then there are the dramas that will be coming to an end (for now anyway):

For All Mankind on Apple TV+ on January 12
Found on NBC on January 16 at 10 PM
Reacher on January 19 on Amazon Prime
Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney+ on January 30

Lastly, out of the 15 made-for-TV movies that will air next month, I am most curious to watch the following:

True Justice: Family Ties on January 12 at 8 PM on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, starring Katherine McNamara from Shadowhunters and Walker Independence as a law school student, who sets out to prove her brother was wrongfully convicted.

A Scottish Love Scheme on January 13 at 8 PM on the Hallmark Channel, starring Erica Durance as a woman who travels to Scotland with her mother and reconnects with a childhood family friend.

The full January TV calendar, highlighting the specials, dramas, limited series and made-for-TV movies, will be posted tomorrow.
