San Diego Comic Con Without Talent
This year’s San Diego Comic Con will get started tomorrow evening with its annual Preview Night and will run through this Sunday in the afternoon.
However, this year will be a bit different – not because of the pandemic, which caused San Diego Comic Con to go virtual – but because of the recently announced SAG-AFTRA strike that has actors hitting the picket lines along with member of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) who have been on strike since April 18.
According to the TV-Theatrical-Streaming strike order, members are prohibited from participating in interviews as well as promotion of or publicity services at personal appearances, conventions, fan expos, festivals, panels and social media [among others].
That basically means that any panels at Comic Con where talent is to participate in any interviews or panels – they CANNOT do them.
The day after the strike was announced, numerous panels were cancelled, and it is more than likely that any panels for TV shows, theatrical releases and streaming series may still take the stage, but the talent won’t be there.
If you are going to San Diego Comic Con this year, good luck finding any of your favorite talent if they are part of SAG-AFTRA, and to be honest I would be surprised if any member of the WGA shows up either. It’s going to be a very strange event this year without the bulk of the talent, and for once, I’m glad I am not attending because it’s going to be slim pickings.

San Diego Comic Con will be held at the San Diego Convention Center from Wednesday, July 19 to Sunday, July 23.
