Do You Remember: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

By  |

On January 13, 2008, the new sci-fi TV series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, a spin-off from the first two Terminator films, debuted on FOX.

The series picked up after the events that took place in Terminator 2: Judgment Day; the year is 1997 (rather than 1995 as in the movie), Sarah Connor (Game of Thrones alum Lena Headey) and her son John (Thomas Dekker from Backstrom and Swimming with Sharks) successfully destroy the T-1000; but in the TV series, a T-888 going by the name of Cromartie (Owain Yeoman from The Mentalist in the pilot and then played by Garret Dillahunt from Fear the Walking Dead and Raising Hope) is sent back to kill John.

However, Cameron (Firefly alum Summer Glau), a Terminator that John sent back from 2029 to protect his younger self, leaps forward in time with John and Sarah to the year 2007 to prevent a delayed Judgment Day once and for all. But in doing so, this makes them wanted fugitives and with the fear of pending leukemia on Sarah’s mind, they must also face the reality that other enemies from the future could also be after them.

Other cast members included:

Richard T. Jones (Judging Amy and The Rookie) as FBI Special Agent James Ellison, who is pursuing Sarah;
Brian Austin Greene (of Beverly Hills, 90210) fame as Derek Reese, a Resistance Fighter sent to the past by the future John Connor, who is the older brother of Kyle Reese (John’s father);
Leven Rambin (All My Children and The Hunger Games) as Riley Dawson, John’s love interest; and,
Shirley Manson (lead singer of the band Garbage) as Catherine Weaver (who joined the cast in season 2), a shape-shifting Terminator disguised as the CEO of a high-tech corporation.

The recurring cast included:

Dean Winters (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) as Charley Dixon, a paramedic who was Sarah’s fiance until Sarah and John traveled through time to 2007; and,
Stephanie Jacobsen (Australia’s long-running soap Home and Away) as Jesse Flores, an Australian resistance sailor and Derek Reese’s love interest.

Some of the guest stars throughout the show’s run included:

Jonathan Jackson (Nashville) [He played Kyle Reese]
Leah Pipes (The Originals)
Busy Philipps (Girls5Eva)
Sonya Walger (Lost and For All Mankind)
Bailee Madison (Good Witch and Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin) [when she was still a little girl]
Floriana Lima (A Million Little Things)
Ryan Kelley (Teen Wolf)
Sasha Roiz (Grimm)
Joshua Malina (The West Wing)
Todd Stashwick (12 Monkeys)
Jon Huertas (Castle and This Is Us)
Richard Schiff (The West Wing)
John Pyper-Ferguson (The Last Ship)
Dean Norris (Claws)
Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy)

The show opened during the mid-season of the 2007-2008 TV season airing only nine episodes, but was actually the highest-rated new scripted series of that TV season, getting renewed for a second season. But, the second season, which consisted of a full 22-episode order, didn’t perform as well in the ratings, and despite efforts by fans, the show was not renewed for a third season.

That didn’t stop the show from receiving a few awards, though. The show got a handful of Teen Choice Awards in 2008, including individual honors for Summer Glau and Thomas Dekker as well as for both Choice Breakout and Action Show. It also received a couple of Saturn Awards in 2007 for Summer Glau and Lena Headey as well as Best Network TV Series. It even got a couple of Emmys for Picture Editing, Outstanding Special Effects and Stunt Coordination. It should also be noted that Bear McCreary was the composer of the music heard in the show.

The final episode of the show aired on April 10, 2009.
