My Top Choices for August TV
We are already in the middle of summer, and that just seems unbelievable to me. Where has this year gone?
Just like every other month, there is an overload of programming to watch from new dramas, to limited series premieres, to loads more made-for-TV movies.
It’s time to pick and choose what are my top choices for the month of August.
MOVIES, MOVIES, MOVIES
First, there are the movies that will be debuting throughout the month:
On August 7, Big Sky River on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries at 9 PM, starring Emmanuelle Vaugier and When Calls the Heart’s Kavan Smith.
On August 20, Dating the Delaneys on the Hallmark Channel at 8 PM, starring Rachel Boston and Paul Campbell.
On August 21, The Engagement Plot on UPtv at 7 PM, starring (again) Rachel Boston and Trevor Donovan.
Also on August 21, Groundswell on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries at 9 PM, starring Lacey Chabert.
WELCOME TO THE FOLD
Then there are the new dramas that will be making their debuts:
On August 5, the Netflix small screen adaptation of The Sandman based on the Neil Gaiman graphic novel, will debut online.
The series will be focused on when the Sandman, aka Dream (Tom Sturridge) – the powerful cosmic being who controls all our dreams – is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for over a century. He must journey across different worlds and timelines to fix the chaos his absence has caused. The ensemble cast includes Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance, David Thewlis, Gwendoline Christie, Jenna Coleman, Joely Richardson, the voices of Mark Hamill and Patton Oswalt, Stephen Fry and Kirby Howell-Baptiste.
On August 12, another small screen series adaptation will debut on Amazon – this time the series is based on the box office movie A League of Their Own will debut online.
This version will tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball, taking a deeper look at race and sexuality, following the journey of a whole new ensemble of characters as they carve their own paths towards the field, both in the League and outside of it. The cast includes Dale Dickey, D’Arcy Carden, Kelly McCormack and Nick Offerman.
On August 16, the new period piece drama Leonardo will debut on The CW at 8 PM.
Aidan Turner stars as Leonardo da Vinci in a series that will focus on the extraordinary life of the renowned artist through the works that made him famous, through the stories hidden within those works, revealing little by little the inner torment of a man obsessed with attaining perfection. The cast includes Giancarlo Giannini, Freddie Highmore and James D’Arcy.
On August 17, the Disney+ Marvel Universe series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law will debut online.
Tatiana Maslany will star as Jennifer Walters (aka She-Hulk), a lawyer who specializes in superhuman-oriented legal cases. The cast includes Jameela Jamil, Josh Segarra, Mark Ruffalo. Renee Elise Goldsberry and Tim Roth.
On August 21, the new Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon will debut on HBO at 9 PM.
Based on the George R.R. Martin “Fire & Blood” series, set 200 years before the events of the series Game of Thrones, the series will tell the story of House Targaryen. The cast includes include Matt Smith, Paddy Considine, Bill Paterson, Fabian Frankel, Graham McTavish, Olivia Cooke and Rhys Ifans.
