Blood & Treasure: Observations From “The Soul of Genghis Khan” and “Tales of the Golden Tiger”
After nearly three years, Blood & Treasure is back with its second (and probably last) season. This time the drama is airing on Paramount+ instead of on the show’s original home on CBS.
It’s been worth the wait, for sure, with viewers getting to see Danny and Lexi, Chuck and even Shaw back in action on another antiquities adventure.
The first two episodes of season two of Blood & Treasure premiered online Sunday, focusing on:
Episode 1: “The Soul of Genghis Khan” – When a gang attacks the Vatican in search of an ancient relic called The Soul of Genghis Khan, Danny and Lexi get drawn into the investigation.
The Good:
It was great watching the opening scene of Danny and Lexi pretending to be broken up to take down that woman who forged paperwork and was hiding a priceless artifact. It was such fun seeing them in action. Thankfully, halfway through that scene I realized they were undercover. I’m just glad I caught on to the ruse quickly. It was so great to also see Chuck, but so hard to watch him (and the others) get hurt by that explosion. I loved the lines they gave Chuck, especially when he berated Danny and Lexi for doing “the Remington Steele without” him. Priceless! I just wonder how many viewers of this episode will even know Remington Steele in order to understand the joke. Of course, Jacob Reece’s father was with the CIA (as explained in that old film reel); one more complication that we need from that family. Great introduction of Father Alonzo (the supposed member of the infamous Vatican Intelligence) as well.
The Bad:
How did I not see the fake-out of Kate being kidnapped, and her actually being involved in it sooner?! I was more upset with myself for not seeing that one coming. Then there is the whole mystery behind who killed Jacob Reece. Do we really want to know given everything we know he did to Danny, Lexi and so many other people? I hope they don’t focus any more time on solving that mystery considering they have a far bigger mystery to solve, trying to find the spirit banner. Kate and Danny were engaged when they were younger? I don’t like that part of Danny’s past, and hopefully it won’t make for any complications between Danny and Lexi.
Additional Thoughts:
I knew they would have to explain Gwen’s absence, but I wasn’t expecting the reason to be she’s on sabbatical, writing a book in a cabin in the Swiss Alps, really? The actress who played Gwen (Katia Winter, who some of our readers will remember as Katrina Crane in FOX’s Sleepy Hollow) was in the latest season of The Boys so I’m wondering if that was a schedule conflict for her or if she just chose not to return for season 2 of Blood & Treasure.
Episode 2: “Tales of the Golden Tiger” – The search for Kate Reece takes Danny and Lexi to Vietnam, where they reunite with none other than Aiden Shaw. Lexi’s fighting skills are put to the test as the team infiltrates the dangerous Black Lotus – an underground fight club – where they learn about a vicious new terrorist.
The Good:
Shaw is back and in fine form, and a legit business owner now. Too funny! How about that little partner of his – Hahn?! Those scenes were quite comical and fun. It was great to see a slightly different side of Shaw, especially with his fixation over the placement of his flowers (which obviously led to the discovery at the end about the CIA bugs that Danny found in the house and the reveal that Kate Reece is also with the CIA just like her grandfather). So does that make her a rogue agent or simply trying to complete a mission her grandfather undertook? Let’s hope she’s nothing like her father. I loved all the lines they gave to Shaw in this episode such as, “I’m your Huckleberry.” “Shaw’s place has ground rules.” and “I’m here in strictly a heroic capacity.” His little flirtation with Violet was pretty Shaw-like too. And then there was the fight between Violet and Lexi. How can two women who beat the crap out of each other, while fighting with swords I might add, only end up looking sweating but still gorgeous? It’s criminal, I tell you, criminal!
The Bad:
This “Great Khan” seems like a cut-throat kind of guy given what he did to Zhang (the guy who the team chased after) at the end, feeding him to those crocodiles. What a horrible way to torture and kill someone. The Great Khan is obviously even more brutal than Farouk/Hardwick from season one.
Additional Thoughts:
I wonder if we’ll see Violet (Lexi’s former partner) again or if that was a one-off. I had to agree with Lexi when she told Danny that maybe they should have Violet join them in their search. It might not be a bad idea to have another kick ass woman on the team.
