Outlander Season Finale Recap: “I Am Not Alone”

By  |

The sixth season of Outlander came to an end after a brief eight episodes (thanks to the pandemic!) on Sunday night.

The opening clip featured a glimpse into a diner where it appeared that Claire and Brianna were seemingly sitting waiting for cheeseburgers and French fries to be served at their table. This little clip was (of course) foreboding for a screen further into the episode where Claire tells Jamie about how a condemned man would be allowed a hearty last meal, usually a favorite meal; and Claire told Jamie her last meal would be a cheeseburger and fries from that very diner.

But first let’s talk about Jamie and Claire standing off against Richard Brown and his Committee of Safely (or more like a lynch mob) at the big house on Fraser’s Ridge. Sadly, they were severely outnumbered because Fergus and Marsali were gone from the Ridge; Brianna and Roger had just left for Edenton and even Lizzie and her husbands (yep, both the twins) were away from the big house as well. They were left with Mrs. Bug who was sent to get help.

Unfortunately, that help didn’t arrive in time nor in enough numbers to make a difference, making it necessary for Jamie and Claire to attempt a weak stand-off on their own inside the big house while Richard Brown and his men circled the house, shattering windows, shutters and creating other damage inside the couple’s beautiful home. As time dragged on, and rolled into another day, the fisherfolk arrived. While they did not raise arms against Jamie and Claire, they weren’t exactly on the couple’s side either.

It was then that Jamie and Claire’s small but devoted group of supporters arrived at the big house followed shortly by an additional, but very unlikely, supporter: Tom Christie. Since they were clearly outnumbered, Jamie agreed that he and Claire would depart together with Richard Brown and his men – because Jaime would not leave Claire’s side, of course. Surprisingly, Tom spoke up stating that Jamie and Claire should be allowed to sleep in their own bed and leave the following morning; and that he would accompany them to make sure that justice was served properly. Despite his past animosity toward Jamie and even his uncertainty towards Claire, and even more so, the fact his daughter was the murder victim, he seemed to be one of the few on the side of Jamie and Claire.

Interspersed around the turmoil on the Ridge was the journey of Brianna, Roger and Jemmy as they headed to Edenton. Their story focused, of course, on Jemmy: what to tell him about “when” his parents are really from, how they know about what’s to come and that he will have to keep their secret when he is old enough to understand it all. More importantly, they discovered that Roger is, indeed, Jemmy’s biological father all thanks to a head full of lice. When Brianna discovers the insects on her son’s head, she has to clip off nearly all of his hair; and in doing so, finds a mark on his scalp; a mark that Roger recognizes as he has one on his scalp too. When he tells Brianna it’s hereditary, the joy on both of their faces was palpable; and Roger had Brianna clip his hair too.

Meanwhile, on the way to the seminary in Edenton — after a VERY CUTE moment in which little Jemmy leans into his mom’s belly and tells his baby sibling, “Hi baby. I love you a lot” — Bree realizes that the boy is itching his head. Turns out, he has lice. And when she and Roger crop his hair to get rid of the vermin, they realize he’s developed a nevus (or mole) on his scalp. Roger isn’t bothered; they’re benign, and he’s got one in roughly the same place. “They’re hereditary,” he says, then there’s a beat where both Rog and Bree realize what the appearance of Jemmy’s spot could mean. Happily, Roger decides that he wants to cut his hair, as well, and Bree does the honors.

So began the arduous trek to take Claire to justice, as the threat of “independency” was neigh and no court could be found. It seemed necessary to take Claire to Wilmington in order to find any kind of court that would hear the claim being brought against her. As they neared the city, Ian revealed himself to Jamie, letting him know “they” were nearby and would help at his command.

That help was definitely needed once Jamie and Claire were separated by Richard Brown and his men, who tricked Jamie into getting water for him and Claire, leaving Claire alone in the wagon for which they were relegated during the long trek. While Claire was taken to a Wilmington that was clearly in shambles, Jamie was beaten and taken to the beach where he was going to be forced onto a ship that would take him back to Scotland, seemingly separating him from Claire forever. Just as things appeared at their worst, an arrow was shot into the chest of one of Richard Brown’s men. It was Ian along with the Cherokee Chief and a number of his braves; they were there to save Jamie, taking down all of those men on the beach and then setting off to rescue Claire, who was locked up in a jail cell by the sheriff in Wilmington. Thus giving fans a big cliffhanger until season 7 happens.

Season 7 of Outlander is in production right now in Scotland, but an official airdate has not been announced. It could be a long wait so we are in for another long Droughtlander.
