Outlander Recap: “Hour of the Wolf”
Before tonight’s new episode of Outlander airs, it’s time to review what happened on last Sunday’s new episode that focused primarily on Young Ian.
As the episode opened, we saw how Young Ian was accepted into the Mohawk tribe, the ceremony involved in his facial tattoo, his hair being removed and braided and, as the Mohawk Chief stated, “wiping the white blood from his veins” making him a Mohawk with the name of Wolf’s Brother.
This episode also finally gave viewers a closer look into Young Ian’s life among the Mohawk: how he won the love of a young Indian girl, who he named Emily – because he had difficulty saying her Indian name of Wahionhaweh; how they were joined as husband and wife; and the heartbreaking loss of two babies. Viewers also got to see how one of the clan mothers told Young Ian it was time for him to leave Emily and the Mohawk since his white blood was not allowing her to have children; and to see Emily chose a new husband in Kaheroton (the Indian brave who dragged Roger across the country when he was inadvertently sold to the Mohawk last season after being mistaken for Stephen Bonnet).
Young Ian and Jamie were surprised to see Kaheroton in the Cherokee village when the two brought the recently delivered guns to the Indian village, which started Young Ian on the path of retelling his life with the Mohawk to his beloved uncle.
Most of the episode was centered around Young Ian’s life with the Mohawk, but Jamie also encountered another Indian agent – Scotchee Cameron – who turned out to not only be involved in some illegal land purchases but also that he was a coward. A fight that broke out between Young Ian and Kaheroton (over Emily) was broken up by Scotchee and Jamie; that in turn created strife between Scotchee and Kaheroton; that in turn brought about a duel between the two men. Scotchee revealed himself to be a cheat and a coward; and eventually led Young Ian and Kaheroton to part ways amicably (all things considered).
As for life on the Ridge, Brianna told Jamie about the Trail of Tears that would happen 60 years from their present time, how the Indians would be cheated out of their land and then butchered. Jamie in turn warned the Cherokee Chief of this event, explaining that both his wife and daughter had the ability to see future events, warning the Chief to not go to a new place, to not fight, but rather to hide.
Also, the episode showed that Jamie has put Fergus in charge of selling their trade goods, sending their adopted son off to work, with the hope that he will heal, perhaps but a little distance between himself and his worries, and even pay a visit to Aunt Jocasta.
In Claire’s surgery, she tested her ether on both Lizzie and Josiah with her new apprentice Malva by her side. It is clear that Malva just can’t help herself as she attempted to flirt with Josiah, but Lizzie put the young girl in her place. If only Jamie and Claire could have done the same thing at the end of the episode when Malva spied on them making love in the barn after Jamie’s late return from the Cherokee village.
