Outlander “Allegiance” Recap
Sunday night’s episode of Outlander was chock-full of story, seeming to cover a little bit of everything on Fraser’s Ridge.
The episode started out focusing on the buildings being worked on by the newly arrived fisherfolk, including the new church – for which Tom Christie insisted should have been built before any other building on the Ridge.
From there the story delved into the lives of all the main characters:
* Jamie has his first meeting with the Cherokee as Indian Agent, during which he was told that they wanted more guns from the King
* Claire had a follow-up visit with Tom Christie to check on the stitches in his hand, where she, again, told him she could perform surgery on his other hand to which he yet again refused
* Claire invited Malva to join her on her next visit to Marsali to check on her advanced pregnancy
Jamie was awakened by two half-naked Indian women who were offering their bodies to him; only to have the devoted husband averting his eyes and begging Ian to translate his disinterest in their offer
* Despite her father’s disapproval, Malva showed up at Marsali’s cabin to learn from Claire
* During that examination, Marsali finally came clean to Claire that the bruises on her arm were, indeed, caused by Fergus; and that he feels responsible for what happened to both Claire and Marsali
* Brianna shared with Roger that she is going to attempt to make matches from white phosphorus brought to her by Lord John
* Jamie arrived home early from the Cherokee camp to have a romp in the afternoon with his beloved wife
* Jamie then meet with Major MacDonald, but didn’t tell him about the Cherokee’s request for guns, which upset his nephew Ian
* Jamie and Ian had a private conversation about taking heed with what they know – thanks to Claire – about the future of the Indians
* Then the Ridge gathered for the funeral of old Mrs. Wilson, who unexpectedly rose from the dead only to succumb to an aortic aneurysm (as diagnosed by Claire, making her prey to rumors of her being a witch – like we haven’t been down that road before)
* Brianna announced that she created matches – showing off her creation to her family – who inadvertently jumped to an early conclusion, thinking that her announcement was that she was pregnant – which isn’t the case despite her and Roger trying to get pregnant with no success
* Marsali experiences pain that leads to a lot of concern for her and the baby’s health; and Roger racing off to find Fergus, who he rails upon for being too drunk to be concerned over his wife and the life of their fourth child
* Then there was the awkward scene of Fergus breastfeeding from Marsali to (supposedly) help with her delivery, and an off-screen sex scene that was made even more uncomfortable for Jamie, Claire, Brianna and a visiting Malva (who was there to help with the birth)
* Brianna and Ian talked in the barn with Brianna telling him about how the Indians were treated based on her knowledge of the future
* Marsali gave birth to a healthy little boy to be named Henri-Christian, but he is a dwarf; and that revelation set Fergus out of the house
* The Cherokee showed up at the Ridge to press Jamie about their request for guns; with Ian telling Jamie that if he “won’t help them, I will”
* Jamie dealing with the weight of the world on his shoulders as he and Brianna talk about the impending future
* Jamie going to the new church being built to let Tom know that it will be a meeting house where everyone – man, woman and child – will be welcome
* This conversation as well as Malva spending too much time with Claire, and not enough time on her household duties, set Tom off kilter (which seemed to be a very normal occurrence for him)
* Given the condition of his damaged hand, he couldn’t whip Malva as he wanted, and she glared at him, which set her father off even more (throwing accusations that his daughter is just like her long deceased mother)
* Ian visited Marsali and the baby where he admitted to her that he had a child with his Mohawk wife (a conversation which was overhead by Jamie)
* Tom showed up at the big house to let Claire know he had a change of heart, telling her he would have the surgery [claiming it gets in the way of him being able to write (what a liar!), but she sent him away – for now – until his other hand has healed
* And then, the episode ended with Jamie writing a letter to the Governor alerting the man of the gun request by the Cherokee, which was spurred by the revelation that Ian had a Mohawk child, making his nephew’s allegiance to the Indians as paramount as his allegiance to his family.
