The Book of Life! A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES: Thoughts on Season 3, Episode 6
The last season of A Discovery of Witches has begun!
This week on A Discovery of Witches:
After receiving Benjamin’s message, Matthew leaves Sept-Toursat dawn to track him down. Diana enlists Sarah’s help to finally get the Book of Life.
So let’s talk about Episode 4! Please join us as we share our thoughts on the episode. And while we are at it – there are spoilers below. Lots of them. Read at your own risk.
THE GOOD:
Roz:
I was really impressed with everything about Diana putting back together The Book of Life and the way that’s it’s part of her. I think that spells a different sort of ending than I imagined.
Christie:
Peter Knox’s end was sooooo satisfying! It’s different from the book but that’s OK, because seeing Sarah exhibit some amazing power was worth it.
Also, I’m glad that they got Gallowglass back, because he sort of stayed away from Diana in the book, and I was happy to see him get past his feelings. And I love that we get a glimpse of at least Cora the firedrake tattoo, especially since we never get to see Cora again on the show.
THE BAD
Roz:
My hatred of both Benjamin and Satu (what!) is so powerful at this point. I have issues with Gerbert too, but now it really does seem like everyone against Diana and Matthew.
Christie:
I was intrigued by the changes with Satu but now I’m disappointed because I really don’t feel like it meshes with her characterization. Also, I don’t like how whiny Baldwin is in this episode. He came around to Diana’s side after the Christening, and that made much more sense to me.
BOOK VS. TV
Christie:
In the book, Peter Knox is working with Benjamin, and it’s Knox that is at the hospital in Poland with him. Diana dispatches Knox in the book and it’s very satisfying, but I actually like Knox’s end on the show better because I didn’t quite respect his alliance with Benjamin other than he and Gerbert were allied and Gerbert was allied with Benjamin. It made Knox seem more like a puppet than a creature of his own agency, which he is at the end, even if it is a destructive end. And I like that better as well, that he pretty much falls apart and drives himself made in his quest for power.
Diana is more transformed by her merging with the Book of Life in the book as well, and I’m a little disappointed we didn’t get that. We just got a little light show with the text on her skin. It’s a minor thing but I thought that was really cool and I was curious how they would bring it all to life.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Roz:
What happens with the “book” in Diana and what Ben’s doing to Matthew?
Christie:
One more episode left and we’ll soon know how it all ends. I don’t have any predictions, really, but I’m hoping for one heck of a magic show!
