Do You Remeber: Witches of East End
The Lifetime drama Witches of East End, based on the novel by Melissa de la Cruz, debuted on October 6, 2013. The show was set in the fictional seaside town of East End, following the lives of a family of witches – Joanna Beauchamp (Julia Ormond, best known for the box office movies Legends of the Fall and the remake of Sabrina and more recently for The Walking Dead: World Beyond) and her two grown-up daughters, Freya (Jenna Dewan, best known for the original movie Step Up and more recently in The Rookie) and Ingrid (Rachel Boston, best known for Hallmark Channel movies such as Stop the Wedding and A Christmas Carousel and recently in SEAL Team), as well as Joanna’s sister Wendy (Madchen Amick, best known for Twin Peaks and more recently in Riverdale).
The other series regulars were Daniel Di Tomasso (who has gone on to appear in Major Crimes, Dynasty and The Republic of Sarah) as Killian Gardiner; Eric Winter (who has gone on to appear in Secrets and Lies, Rosewood and currently stars in The Rookie) as Dash Gardiner; and Christian Cooke joined in season two as Frederick Beauchamp.
Some of the recurring actors in the show included Bianca Lawson (Queen Sugar), Ignacio Serricchio (Lost in Space), Virginia Madsen (the box office film Sideways), James Marsters (Buffy, the Vampire Slayer), Jason George (Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19), Joel Gretsch (The 4400), Tom Lenk (Buffy, the Vampire Slayer), Enver Gjokaj (Marvel’s Agent Carter and NCIS: Hawai’i) and Tiya Sircar (The Good Place).
The show also featured brief appearances by the following actors: Nicholas Gonzalez (The Good Doctor and La Brea), Eddie McClintock (Warehouse 13), Rachel Nichols (A Million Little Things and Continuum), Michelle Hurd (Blindspot), the one and only Matt Frewer, Sarah Lancaster (Chuck) and Tasya Teles (The 100) as well as Kaitlin Doubleday, Rukiya Bernard and Kimberley Sustad (all of whom have become a part of the Hallmark Channel cavalcade of actors).
The show was developed for the small screen by Maggie Friedman, who had previously worked on shows like Dawson’s Creek, Related and Eastwick and more recently served as showrunner for Firefly Lane.
Witches of East End had mixed reviews among critics with one review stating the show was a “soapy, silly adaptation of de la Cruz’s best-seller” and another stating “whatever the opposite of spellbinding is, that’s this show.” While the show premiered with 1.9 million viewers, it averaged out to 1.7 million in season one but in season two it dropped to an average of 1.1 million viewers.
The supernatural fantasy drama aired for only two seasons on Lifetime, airing a total of 23 episodes, 10 episodes for the first season and 13 episodes for the second season. The final episode aired on October 5, 2014 with Lifetime officially cancelling the series on November 4, 2014.
