A Million Little Things Roundtable: “six months later”
A Million Little Things had another new episode this week on ABC. Here is the official synopsis for the episode (season 4, episode 6) entitled “six months later”:
Maggie is enjoying success at work and new love in her life, while Gary learns he needs to let go of his past. Rome experiences a curveball with his film and Regina deals with drama of her own.
Nice Girls Cay and Rueben share their thoughts on this episode [spoiler alert]:
Cay:
I’m not always a fan of a time jump, especially as this series has done a couple, some more subtle than others, but I think it really worked here. They needed to give themselves more room to explore story.
That said, Gary hasn’t quite moved along as much as I had hoped, although it seems like they used the time jump to conveniently allow the police to forget about what happened to Peter and their suspicions of Gary? Bringing Darcy back pregnant with her ex’s baby seemed just insanely cruel, but maybe it will help Gary to move on in some way? He sure didn’t look like he was moving on getting so nostalgic about his old POS car, though. That little storyline, assuming it doesn’t go any further, just seemed unnecessary. I don’t think we got any additional real insight into Gary, it just seemed like him being stuck in the past.
Maggie, on the other hand, really seems to have moved on! With a 6 month time jump, if she’s been together with hockey guy for 2 months, that means that they casually dated for 4 months after their ice cream date? I’m not entirely sure that I believe his reason for staying in, but it would be nice if it was sincere. It was also kind of fun for Maggie, and not him, to get recognized on the street. This episode was unique for Maggie because I don’t remember her having any contact with any of the others in the friend group. This is particularly strange because it seems like she would have been the obvious one to go check on Sophie, rather than Eddie. It’s also hard to imagine that she would have been so wrapped up in her job and her new beau that she wouldn’t be keeping tabs on Sophie.
It’s not too surprising that Sophie is doing a bit of rebelling after everything she’s gone through. What’s more surprising is that Eddie ends up being the one to go check on her and seems set up to be in loco parentis for the time being. I guess it isn’t all that surprising because they had a really good relationship before she found out that he was hooking up with Delilah and he really does seem to be moving on with his life in a positive way. He’s also the obvious person to help her get back on track musically seeing as he taught her music long before Peter entered the scene. I hope it works out well for both of them.
I wonder if Eddie is still supporting Nicole? Wasn’t it about six months’ worth of the lease that he had pre-paid (with her money?).
At least Rome got to show his movie for 6 months before the studio found out about it! I miss the dynamics between him and Regina – the phone just isn’t enough. Also, wasn’t Tyrell supposed to be back by now? Have we seen Regina’s dad before? He’s really…something….growing up with him and her mother would have been quite an experience!

Rueben:
Sometimes time jumps in TV shows work, sometimes they don’t. I have to admit that I was a bit nonplussed by this episode, and not just because of the time jump. I guess the writers felt skipping forward was helpful for the overall storylines, but this wasn’t my favorite episode.
We knew from the clip that was shown last week that we were gonna have to deal with an appearance by Darcy, but I certainly wasn’t expecting her to be pregnant! There was, of course, that brief moment of thinking Gary was the baby daddy, but they alleviated our worries about that quickly. I hope this is the final time we have to deal with the Darcy storyline. It’s time for Gary to move on; and if the cops aren’t going to be coming after him (or Christopher), then we need something better than him reliving his youth via his old college car. This seemed like a throw-away story to me, and while Bennie – the college-aged owner of Gary’s old car – gave Gary one piece of good advice a la Dr. Seuss: “don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened,” it’s time for Gary to move on; and hopefully he is on the path to do just that.
I was annoyed by Sophie falling into the same old cliche of a young adult partying when there is no real parental unit in close proximity. It’s just pathetic to my way of thinking. I’m one of the few people on the planet that isn’t accepting of partying and drinking no matter what age you are, and this kind of story line just irritates the hell out of me. Sophie needs to grow up and get her life on track. Hopefully she’ll move forward with the opening at the music school she wanted to go to and get Eddie to help her with her audition piece. I get it that she’s upset about a lot of things – and she has every reason to be upset – but wallowing in it, isn’t going to help. She needs to clean up her act, and move forward.
I felt bad for Regina regarding her dad letting her down (in what seems to be a case of lifelong disappointment by him) and Rome getting served. I also felt bad for Valerie, Regina’s partner. Regina may have meant well, but revealing Valerie’s past to anyone wasn’t really Regina’s place. I think it’s time for Regina to come home so she can be there to support Rome, as I don’t think this situation with him being sued by Paragon Plus is going to go away anytime soon. I just don’t want to see Cassandra – the lady Rome met at the church screening of his movie – gets in the way of his relationship with Regina. We both want to see something GOOD to happen for Regina and Rome. They’ve had enough hard times.
You brought up a good point about Nicole. The apartment was paid for 6 months, and it’ll be interesting to see if they bring her back into the story somehow.
