A Million Little Things: “Justice, Part 1 and Part 2” (Season Finale)

By  |

A Million Little Things aired a double-header this week: it’s third season two-part season finale.

Here is the official synopsis for both episode (season 3, episodes 17 and 18) entitled “Justice: Part 1 and Justice: Part 2”:

Sophie seeks justice for her trauma, and Maggie forces Gary to take a hard look at himself and his relationships. Meanwhile, Eddie goes to extreme measures to fight for his family, and Rome and Regina make big changes for their future.

Nice Girls Cay and Rueben share their thoughts on this episode [spoiler alert]:

Cay:

I’m not sure where to start, so perhaps from that ending?! WTH does Gary think he’s doing? Maggie gives him a big talk on doing things to make him happy rather than always worrying about everyone else, so he goes from there to assaulting (and what else?) Peter? It seems totally out of character for him and about as stupid a choice as one can get. And the timing, with Sophie outing Peter on Maggie’s podcast, is just going to bring more attention to Peter which is bad for Gary. SO STUPID! And Darcy trying so hard to get ahold of him after the baby discussion is going to blow his alibi with his dad, to boot.

Can’t say that I was surprised that the cops couldn’t/didn’t do much when Sophie went to them as the he/she said always seems to work out for the he in these matters. I wish she would have tried doing more sleuthing first – maybe tried to talk to other past students of Peter’s? That said, her telling her story publicly (well, as publicly as Maggie’s podcast is popular) will potentially encourage other girls to come forward and would certainly make his life quite uncomfortable. All the more reason for Gary to not go do something really stupid.

Looks like we’ll have to wait until next season to see what happens with Darcy and Gary because her voicemail sure made it sound like they aren’t done, but obviously whatever happens with Peter will be important in what happens with Gary next season.

Well, we got our wish on Alan and Katherine – it looks like they are seriously done! Eddie’s proposal to Katherine about him taking weekly drug tests to maintain shared custody seems very reasonable – why wasn’t this on the table before? Just because she wanted to hurt him? Meanwhile, poor Theo of course gets caught in the crossfire in an extremely predictable way. And, what’s with the call from the person who hit Eddie? Is that going to bring him some comfort, or just make things worse again, cause him to relapse, lose custody, blah blah? I hope that story leads him somewhere better, because I don’t think he needs any more drama.

Speaking of not needing any more drama, just like that, Regina’s restaurant is gone! And she realizes she should be thankful for what she has when she talks to the guy who just lost his wife to COVID (as they both talk in her restaurant without masks!!!). Poor Tyrell, now thinking that he is responsible for his mother being deported! I sort of wish it had been Kyle. OTOH, I love his relationship with Rome.

And that brings us to Danny, Delilah, and Charlie. Danny has grown up so fast! What an awkward situation Eddie and Delilah (and his father) have put him in. It seems like he forgave Eddie quicker than might be appropriate, but then again, I can’t say I understand the emotional dynamics when you find out that your mom had an affair with one of your dad’s best friends that you really liked. Even more complicated when he’s the father of your little sister and your dad died by suicide before she was born. Oh, and you’re young and gay…so perhaps his reaction was 100% appropriate as I’m certainly not qualified to judge. It was very sweet that he got kissed. His “friend” seems like a really nice guy, and he can certainly use some support right now.

I can understand Delilah wanting to get away from all the complexity and all the emotions of her life in Massachusetts, but it’s kind of surprising that she expected that Danny and Sophie [and Eddie] would readily agree. Her plan seems doomed to fail, but I guess we’ll find out next season.

Rueben:

Holy crap this was a convoluted episode! Not that it was hard to follow; just that it took so many twists and turns. I’ll join you in starting with the ending. I was screaming at the TV from the minute Gary was at his dad’s – as I knew something was coming – and when we was walking up to the house, I knew it was Peter’s house and that he was going to do something incredibly STUPID! I was really hoping against hope that when Peter opened that door that Gary had decided against doing anything; but as soon as Peter walked out on the porch, I saw it playing in slow motion BEFORE the scene played out. My imagination wasn’t quite like what actually played out, but it was just as bad – if not worse. I cannot believe that Gary would do this, and I can completely see him doing this. But that doesn’t mean that it was the right thing to do – not in the least. Gary has screwed himself over so bad, and I don’t see how they are going to get him out of this in any way. And you are right, Cay, Darcy’s voice mail to him is going to blow his weak alibi.

I cannot believe that Delilah thinks that taking Charlie, Danny and Sophie off to France permanently is the answer; or that Danny and Sophie would both be okay with just dropping their entire lives to move there and start over when they have established lives in Boston. I get it that she felt better in France because people weren’t looking at her as the woman whose husband committed suicide or the woman who had an affair; but the answer isn’t uprooting her family. How is that going to help her kids?

Regina signing over the restaurant so quickly was quite startling to me, as she had wanted it so badly; she and Delilah worked so hard to get it up and running; and then she just signs it over. And, since Delilah was her partner in the restaurant, shouldn’t Delilah be signing that paperwork too? And with Rome seemingly not taking that commercial (or is he?), and Regina no longer owning the restaurant, where are they going to get any income?

I agree with you that Tyrell shouldn’t be blaming himself for what happened to his mom. It wasn’t his fault – even if he “thinks” it was. It was an unfortunate circumstance; and hopefully one that maybe can be worked out next season?

As for Gary and Darcy, I have to admit that I was hoping that when Darcy said she didn’t want to have another child, that perhaps that revelation would be the final straw for their relationship; especially given the fact that she and Liam will be moving away. And then she left that voice mail message for Gary.

You are so right about the he said/she said situation for Sophie. I was proud of her for going to the police, but I had a bad feeling even before she went in to give her statement that they were going to twist what happened to put the blame on her. You made a good point that perhaps she should have done a little more research before going to the cops; but now that she’s done Maggie’s podcast, maybe that will bring other victims to light; but then that will just bring us back to whatever Gary ends up doing to Peter; and putting him right back into hot water.

On a side note: it was sweet to see that Danny’s friend really does like him; and that he’s a good kid, leaving the house so Danny could comfort his mom. It’s nice to see that Danny is happy with who he is and has someone in his life who cares about him.

Then there is the whole Eddie and Katherine fiasco. I didn’t buy into the idea that Eddie would use the burn accident against Katherine in order to get custody of Theo. I agree with you that they should have just come up with the solution that Eddie offered. We didn’t need to go through all that other crap. It was just so needless. And, what’s worse, getting that call form the woman who claimed she was the one who hit him. That was out of left field. I enjoyed the goofy little moments of Eddie giving scam callers a hard time; and the little bit with him and Theo was just as funny; but that last minute reveal – Groan!

There are so many things left up in the air with this season finale that TPTB in the writer’s room are really going to have to work overtime to give us some good conclusions next season; and let’s hope that they time jump to the end of the pandemic because they have done such a bad job sticking to wearing masks or not wearing masks; staying in their pods or being around lots of people; they just didn’t stick to the protocols of how we have had to handle the pandemic.

Please make season four better!
