Do You Remember: Red Band Society

By  |

Back on September 7, 2014, the FOX teen medical comedy-drama Red Band Society debuted during the 2014-2015 TV season. The series was developed by Margaret Nagle based on the Catalan drama entitled Polseres vermelles. The FOX series focused on a group of teenagers living together as patients in a hospital’s pediatric ward.

The main cast consisted of:

Oscar winner Octavia Spencer (The Help and Hidden Figures) played Dena Jackson, the strict and seemingly scary head nurse overseeing the pediatric facility;

Dave Annable (Brothers & Sisters) played Dr. Adam McAndrew, the handsome skilled surgeon working at the hospital and an ex-fiancé of Dr. Erin Grace (more on her below);

Ciara Bravo (Big Time Rush and more recently in the Tom Holland film Cherry) played Emma Chota, an intelligent patient with anorexia, who is also the girlfriend of Leo and the love interest of Jordi (more on them below):

Griffin Gluck (the Netflix shows American Vandal and Locke & Key) played Charles “Charlie” Hutchison, a young comatose patient, who was also the narrator of the series:

Zoe Levin (the box office movies The Way Way Back and Palo Alto) played Kara Souders, a high school cheerleader with an enlarged heart, who is at the bottom of the transplant recipient list due to her drug abuse. She is the love interest of Hunter (more on him below);

Rebecca Rittenhouse (the box office movie Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood and the upcoming comedy Maggie) played Brittany Dobler, a new, ambitious, and cheerful nurse;

Charlie Rowe (the TV series Salvation and the box office film Rocketman) played Leo Roth, an amputee and former osteosarcoma patient who is undergoing rehabilitation. He served as the unofficial leader of the Red Band Society which he created himself; and he was in love with Emma;

Nolan Sotillo (a relative newcomer at time, who has since shifted focus to his music) played Jordi Palacios, a patient with Ewing sarcoma, who was newly admitted to the pediatrics ward; and developed an immediate crush on Emma; and,

Astro (the box office movie Luce) played Dashiell “Dash” Hosney, a patient with cystic fibrosis, who tried to impress girls, and was best friends with Leo.

Among the recurring guest stars in the show were:

Wilson Cruz (best known for My So-Called Life but more recently in 13 Reasons Why and Star Trek: Discovery) played Kenji Gomez-Rejon, a nurse;

Daren Kagasoff (best known for The Secret Life of an American Teenager) played Hunter Cole, a leukemia survivor, who later suffered from cirrhosis and was in need of a liver transplant;

Thomas Ian Nicholas (best known for the American Pie movie franchise) played Nick Hutchison, Charlie’s father;

Mandy Moore (This Is Us) played Dr. Erin Grace, McAndrew’s ex-fiancée;

Andrea Parker (The Pretender and Pretty Little Liars) played Sarah Souders, Kara’s mother;

Jes Macallan (Mistresses and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) played Ashley Cole, Hunter’s sister;

Griffin Dunne (This Is Us) played Ruben Garcia, an older hypochondria patient;

Jessica Lu (Awkward and God Friended Me) played Mae, Dash’s online girlfriend who also had cystic fibrosis.

A few other, now familiar, faces in the show included:

Meagan Tandy (Teen Wolf and Batwoman)
Donny Boaz (The Young and the Restless and Six)
Abigail Cowen (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Fate: The Winx Saga)

Sadly, only a few months after the show debuted, Red Band Society stopped production (after its original 13-episode order), and it was pulled from the schedule after airing only 10 episodes.

In January 2015, the show was officially canceled with the final three episodes airing on January 31 and then culminating a week later with a two-hour finale.

The show received mixed or average reviews from the critics while averaging 2.8 million viewers each week.
