A Million Little Things: “united front”

By  |

A Million Little Things aired another new episode this week from its third season.

Here is the official synopsis for this episode (season 3, episode 14) entitled “united front”:

Rome tries to help Tyrell find a productive outlet for his frustrations about the racial issues in America while Regina is dealing with her mother’s concerns regarding the future of Someday. Meanwhile, Katherine and Eddie struggle to navigate the waters of their relationship.

Nice Girls Cay and Rueben share their thoughts on this episode [spoiler alert]:

Cay:

Of course Peter assaulted another girl. And how horrible that she then died by suicide! Hopefully this means that Sophie will speak out about what happened and will manage to bring him to justice. Definitely not what you want to have to do when he’s a respected member of the music community that you want to enter! Poor Sophie! I’m confident that she’ll do what she has to prevent the same thing from happening to another teenager. I also feel for Danny. He is trying to be supportive of Sophie, but isn’t sure how, so he made things worse of course.

So, Darcy is growing on me, but Liam definitely isn’t. Kid has got no social skills and you would have thought that Gary and Darcy would have had the sense to be discreet or tell him not to tell Theo. Also, there is a pretty big bubble going on here in terms of who is allowed in the house, especially unmasked. Not that I expected differently from a show about a huge group of friends who are always together, but it would be nice for them to model safe science-based behavior!

Katherine and Eddie. Sigh. Please don’t punish us for watching with a tortured custody battle! I really just don’t care about them much anymore.

On happier notes, I love Maggie. She definitely can’t sing, but you gotta love her. I really think she should let Sophie sing her theme song. She always seems to know what to say, too, as long as Gary isn’t involved. Maybe we can let her sort out Katherine and Eddie’s divorce and be done with it?

Well, the foreshadowing that we picked up last week about Regina seems to be true – she’s definitely got a concussion or some other sort of brain injury. I hope that it doesn’t drag on! Her mother vs Florence was an interesting comparison. I am glad that Regina and her mother talked about some important stuff and that Florence had the tact and empathy to shrug off the slights thrown her way.

I like the idea of Rome and Tyrell working on a documentary together. It will be good for both of them to have a project to focus on and something to do together. It’s a great way to keep the issues of systemic racism at the forefront without just rehashing recent history.

Rueben:

This episode had a few shining moments, but sadly only those moments made the episode worth watching. I’m SO beyond tired of the Katherine and Eddie storyline. I just want it to end!! The only moment out of their storyline that I valued was Gary helping to get Eddie up those stairs to talk to Theo. Everything else was just bleh. I felt bad for Theo to learn about the divorce from Liam – not really warming up to that kid either! – and then to have his parents not be on the same page about where he will live. I get it, this is all very new and they weren’t expecting to have to tell Theo in that way; but we’ve been down this path before.

Watching Maggie interact with Gary and Darcy was just awkward; but her interaction with Sophie was so sweet (one of the other shining moments for me). I loved that Sophie sat down and simply put the theme song together. She has talent; and Maggie was making a little bit of headway, getting Sophie back on the guitar, until that unexpected visit by her ex-boyfriend. In Danny’s defense, he was just trying to explain to Jake – without saying too much (while saying too much) – that Sophie had a bad encounter. And that leads into Sophie not only going to the MMI director, asking for another audition, but also coming clean to her about her assault; and then learning about Leila Gregory. This revelation will hopefully help Sophie to work through what happened to her, look into what seems to be a pattern of behavior by Peter (the music coach) and perhaps put her on a path to get some justice for herself and the other victims.

We were totally worried about Regina, and we were proven correct. I am deeply concerned about what might be wrong with Regina; and part of me wishes that she were just pregnant instead of potentially dealing with some kind of neurological problem.

I was actually a bit irritated with Tyrell, acting like a typical defiant teenager, until he showed that video to Rome. Even before they showed Rome getting out all that equipment, I knew that Rome was going to suggest they do a documentary on the protests. It may have been predictable, but this will be something great for both Tyrell and Rome, allowing both of them to benefit from this: Tyrell in putting his anger over the injustices into real action and Rome in putting his creative talents to use.

Kudos to Florence for dealing so well with the whole situation between Regina and her mom. I know I wouldn’t have been able to handle it the way she did. I am glad that, for the moment, Regina and her mom were actually able to see eye to eye and learn a little bit about each other (especially Regina) in the process. This won’t, of course, solve their underlying problems, but it could at least help. And, whatever health issue Regina is actually diagnosed with, perhaps that will help bridge the divide (at least a little) between her and her mom.

NOTE: ABC gave A Million Little Things a fourth season renewal!

Cay's family thinks her obsession with pop culture is "not normal". Normal is boring!
