A Million Little Things: “listen”

By  |

A Million Little Things aired another new episode this week from its third season.

Here is the official synopsis for this episode (season 3, episode 13) entitled “listen”:

In response to the killing of George Floyd, the group of friends are forced to reevaluate their own racial biases and take to the streets of Boston. Rome opts out in favor of his mental health and has a candid conversation with his father about how to effect change.

Nice Girls Cay and Rueben share their thoughts on this episode [spoiler alert]:

Cay:

This was another painful episode to watch, but because of the subject matter, not because of how it was handled, which I think was well overall. I think it is good for people to see others point of view, even in a fictional format (it might be better in a fictional format – less threatening). It was nice to see Rome and his father have a conversation about their life experiences and really connect.

I think that they could have gotten their point across without hurting Regina, though. I was pretty sure that she was going to be in the hospital and find out she was pregnant, but it does not seem that is where they are going because you’d think she’d know by now and would have told Rome. There were a few things that made me wonder if they are setting her up for longer term issues related to what sure appears to be a concussion. I hope not!

Good on Maggie for sticking to her morals although her podcast boss seemed a bit over the top. It seems that they are setting her up to have her own higher end sponsored podcast.

It was nice to see Darcy and Gary have a conversation about his history. I liked how they worked in James Roday Rodriguez’s real life story into Gary’s plot a bit [Rodriguez has a similar ethnic heritage to Gary, but went by Roday to get more diverse roles. He recently rethought this choice and started once again going by his real last name (Rodriquez).] It’s still not entirely clear why Gary’s relationship with his father is the way it is (seemingly strained/distant), but we’re getting bits and pieces.

Can I tell you how excited I was when Alan told Katherine that he was dating someone else? Then he crushed me by admitting he was joking about his fish. Seriously, don’t do that to us!

Rueben:

Yes, I was concerned throughout the episode just how much of the protests they were going to show. I’m glad we only saw a small segment of the protests – and not the destructive side that it, sadly, evolved into each night or the violence for that matter. I didn’t like that Regina was the one who ended up hurt either; in fact, I was really hoping that no one would get hurt; but I guess they needed to show other sides to the protests. I agree, Cay, I thought for sure she was gonna get told that she was pregnant; but nope. I also don’t want to see Regina have any lingering after effects from her injury.

I was just cringing during the scenes with Alan, especially when that protester thought that Alan was Theo’s dad. It’s an easy assumption to make by a stranger, but still hard for Eddie and Katherine and even Alan. At least Theo just laughed it off. He’s still at that age where he would see it as comical. Another year (maybe two) and he won’t see it that way at all. I actually made a sigh of relief when Alan said he was seeing someone else; and then just pissed at him for the lame joke about his goldfish. Really?! That being said, I’m glad that it was Katherine who said they need to step back a little. I don’t think it will help her relationship with Eddie, but it’s the right step to take for now.

It was good to hear Gary tell Darcy a little about his childhood, as we didn’t know all that. And, I had a feeling that Gary’s story was similar to James Roday Rodriguez’s own story too. I was actually proud of him that he made the decision to reveal his true background and go back to his birth name; there are plenty of actors who make that change in order to get work. As for the storyline of Gary, it’d be great to get some flashbacks to his relationship to his dad so we can understand his early life even more.

Kudos to Maggie for doing what she did during her podcasts. She cares about people and that showed; and her boss – Doctor Stacey – deserved what she got; even if she was portrayed a little over the top, as you said. I have a feeling that what is next for Maggie will be WAY better than “Fix In 5” and Doctor Stacey will just disappear; and how much do you bet that Claudia, the gal who was acting as the podcast producer, will jump ship over to whatever Maggie ends up doing?

Florence seems to be fitting in really well, but I am curious to see where this will all go with the pandemic since it is still in its early days in terms of when the show is set.
