Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist: “Zoey’s Extraordinary Mystery”
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist‘s aired a new episode from its second season this week. Let’s first find out what this episode was about.
Here is a synopsis for this week’s episode entitled “Zoey’s Extraordinary Mystery“:
After seeing a medium, Zoey’s powers start glitching again.
Join Nice Girls Roz, Karen, and Rueben as they share their thoughts on this latest, new episode of the second season [spoiler alert]:
Rueben:
What a mixed-up situation Zoey found herself in with her powers on the fritz after seeing Nova, an intuitive (don’t call her a psychic) or can it be blamed only on the electrical issue at Nova’s place? Either way, Zoey was hearing heartsongs from her friends and family that were jacked up to say the least. Watching as Max sang his heart out as if it was literally breaking into a million pieces – despite telling Zoey that he was doing great and was clearly showing no signs of being as upset as his song would have implied. I was screaming throughout most of the episode that it has to be Emily’s song because of her saying to Zoey when asked what to ask the medium a Mitch-related question, she basically asked if she would ever have joy again. It was something random, out of place, and not Mitch-related at all. To see Emily break down in the final scene was gut-wrenching, and so well performed by Alice Lee. She gets my pick for performer of the week for sure.
I nearly peed my pants as Simon sang that little kid’s song about the fox – sorry I’m an aunt only and had never heard that song before (ever!) – and the dance moves incorporated into that song. I was in stitches!! And then to have Perry’s little boy sing that soulful song to Zoey that was clearly meant for Simon. OMG! That little kid can SING!!! On the funny scale, there was also Maggie singing “Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better,” which so obviously should have been what the programmers at SPRQ Point sang rather than “One” (by Three Dog Night), which so clearly was meant for Maggie. All of these swaps were great fun to watch especially Mo singing country because Mo never sings country! And can we just take a moment to comment on how FINE Mo looked in all those wigs and outfits, how crap! So great!! Oh, and Mo’s crime board to help Zoey figure out whose song was meant for whom. Another priceless moment.
I would have loved for Zoey to come clean with Simon about her secret rather than the tiny reveals she gave him. He clearly knew she had been acting a little weird, and perhaps those little reveals will suffice for now, but at some soon point I think she’s gonna need (gonna have to) tell him the truth. Don’t you think?!
All in all, I enjoyed this episode. I thought the heartsongs were great even with the switch-ups and really felt that Alice Lee got to show her acting chops with that moving performance at the end. Give that girl some much overdue credit!!
Roz: Oh Lee Ann, “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?”) is not a kids’ song! It was sort of popular in 2013 and is as bizarre as it sounds. I have odd memories of many high school kids loving it ironically then.
That aside, I love this episode as a look into what some women face postpartum because both Emily and David are each going through something but it’s not so clear how they should ask for help.
I also think it’s time we see Maggie try and find something to do after years at Mitch’s side. We haven’t seen Zoey adapt well to life without her Dad and I wish we had seen some of this more clearly in the earlier episodes. Sure, everyone grieves differently, but I think the show side-stepped much of that process for other stories.

Karen:
Okay, I may go out of order here, but I think that might be fitting considering the theme of this week’s episode.
“The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?” by Simon was freaking hilarious. I think the actors usually sing something that their character would be comfortable singing, so switching them up led to some funny and heartbreaking scenes. I agree that Alice Lee as Emily was the episode’s MVP. (I’m not a huge fan of that rhyming sentence back there, but oh well)
I think this might be my favorite episode this season. The songs were top-notch and performed perfectly.
I dug that there was a little twist so the kid (Rocco Morris as August) got to sing such an adult song. What a talented dude!
I agree that Zoey really should come clean to Simon. She knows that it might cause friction upfront, but ultimately, it’d be a weight off of her shoulders. The only thing I can see standing in her way is how Max felt that he had a disadvantage when Zoey knew his thoughts. Simon is a more sensitive guy, and it might be daunting for him to know everything.
I’m kinda sad that Maggie and Roger never had anything, even a friendship. At least she is moving on and learning that she’s her own person. I’m a firm believer in knowing one’s self before depending upon someone else.
Overall, as I said, this episode was about as good as it gets. Stellar performances, both acting and singing. A+++
Side note: Who’s excited to see Bernadette Peters back next week?! And it looks like Oscar Nunez has been cast as a therapist. So great!
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist will air its next new episode, “Zoey’s Extraordinary Girl’s Night” on NBC on Sunday, April 18 at 9PM.
