A Million Little Things: “the lost sheep”

By  |

A Million Little Things relocated to Wednesdays, back to its original timeslot in fact, this week and gave us another new episode of its third season on ABC.

Here is the official synopsis for this episode (season 3, episode 9) entitled “the lost sheep”:

When Eddie reveals his truth, Katherine suffers the consequences…again. Rome and Regina offer support to Tyrell and his mother, and Maggie and Jamie are forced to address their relationship status.

Nice Girls Cay and Rueben share their thoughts on this episode [spoiler alert]:

Rueben:

This episode was a little hot and cold for me. I was glad that Eddie came clean to Katherine and even to Theo; but I didn’t expect Theo to turn around and blame Katherine for his dad’s problem. I get it, he’s a kid and he doesn’t fully comprehend everything that’s going on, but it’s not Katherine’s fault. Hopefully with time Theo will come to understand that. I actually felt bad for Katherine until she kissed Alan; granted we knew that was going to happen, but I’m so thankful that Alan didn’t let it go any further. Most of all, I hate that they, as a couple (Katherine and Eddie, that is) are once more in crisis. Eddie has a long way to go to get better, but even then I’m not sure if Katherine will be able to put all of this behind her.

What is the hell is Sophie doing? As soon as Jake said she broke up with him, I knew it was the guitar coach that she was seeing. Groan! To me that’s just so irresponsible on her part. Sure she’s being a teenager with raging hormones, but really: he’s a married man. C’mon!! That’s just so wrong!!

The scenes between Maggie and Jaime were sweet once again, especially the Jamie Poppins line (but how is it possible that he’s never seen Mary Poppins – WHAT?!). He did make a difference in her life in so many ways, and they obviously care about each other. I feel like Jamie – albeit briefly – got to be Gary for awhile – being the supportive, pseudo boyfriend – before he takes an exit from her life. Where does Maggie go from here?

As for the stories for Regina and Rome, it is great they are being so supportive and helpful to Tyrell, but where is that going to go? How is it going to play out? How will Alan be able to help given that Tyrell’s mom used his dad’s social security number in order to get a job? That’s gonna make her case even more difficult. Then there is the ongoing issue with Rome’s dad. Just when it seems they are on a better level with each other, they take another step or two back. Granted, that’s how all families are, but it would be nice for them to just once not end up arguing.

I hope that next week’s episode is better, as I’m back on the slant of do I keep watching the show or let it go? It’s frustrating!

Cay:

Yeah, this was also a “meh” episode for me. I didn’t hate it, but didn’t really like it, either.

The best parts for me were Maggie/Jamie and Rome/Regina. First, I actually wasn’t expecting Jamie to leave and go back to England. I guess we all knew that “friends with benefits” was probably not going to work out, but when he followed her to Boston, I thought it was going to be something longer term. I’m not sure about the whole “you mean so much to me that we shouldn’t be together when we are obviously great together” idea, but they need some sort of drama to keep things interesting, I guess! I will very much miss their banter! Not sure where this leaves Maggie now, alone in a pandemic. Adding Darcy and Gary to her “pod” seems ill advised and Katherine and Eddie, while they both could use her professional skills, seems a poor fit. Maybe Rome and Regina? Sucks to be the single woman isolating in a pandemic!

Speaking of Rome and Regina, I like the storyline with Rome and his father relative to some of the other stuff on this show as it’s relatable. I liked the scene with Tyrell where they were acting as a bit of family for him, lighting the candles. They still haven’t made it clear whether Tyrell himself is a citizen or undocumented. If his dad was a citizen, that would seem to make it more likely that he was born in the US as his mother probably met his dad in the US? If that’s the case, he will need foster parents until he’s 18 if his mother remains detained/gets deported. I think there are a lot of ways that they could go with this storyline because frankly, the current system works out for some immigrants but not for others and it can be hard to predict. I’m for any media that humanize the plight of undocumented immigrants because I think that many Americans have no sense of what drives immigrants here or their experiences.

Ugh, Katherine and Eddie. I can absolutely see Katherine’s point of view here – it is horribly frustrating to always be the responsible adult and then feel like you keep getting punished for it! Of course someone seemingly very stable like Alan would be appealing to her, especially after drinking too much. I’m glad he shut her down. Is it too much to hope that he can provide platonic support to her? Poor Theo! I think he’s old enough to know at least some of what’s going on, but I hope he’s still seeing his therapist. Eddie was sober for a long time, that gives me hope that he’ll be able to get back on the wagon and that this experience will make him rethink his relationship to his family.

The plotline this episode that left me screaming at my TV was definitely Sophie. UGH. Just UGH. Teenage girl having affair with married teacher is so cliché and so icky! Can we stop “normalizing” these kind of relationships? Sophie’s around 17, so it’s not explicitly illegal in Massachusetts, just super sleazy because obviously he holds a position of authority over her – she sees him as her ticket to music school. I want to see the guy’s whole life wrecked and I’m not going to forgive the writers if he gets off without any consequences. Gary’s about to have to do some serious parenting! Maybe this is what will bring Delilah back into the picture? Yikes, that’s a fun conversation to have with your daughter via Zoom…
