Comic Con @Home: His Dark Materials Panel

By  |

His Dark Materials has been a fan favorite for much of last year – scores of book fans coming to the show to see another adaption of Phillip Pullman’s books – the show will return of a second season (more or less the second book) in September.

In a short panel as part of Comic Con @Home, most of the season two cast talked about the show and what we can look forward to.

The panel started out with the cast and crew sharing a few stories about season one and what we can see coming in season two. Dafne Keen and co-star Amir Wilson talked about a few stories of being the kids on set this season (in separate rooms for tutoring, to their chagrin), but also talked about the new relationship that will develop between Lyra and Will Parry.

What the teaser shows is all the new worlds and new characters we’ll be meeting, with the noticeable absence of one character, Lord Asriel. Because Lord Asriel is largely absent from the second book, the show had planned to have a stand-alone episode of what he must have been doing, but because of COVID-19 that was the lone episode to not finish filming. When it is safe to resume filming that episode will finish.

The other big news from the season is that Andrew Scott’s deamon will be voiced by Phoebe Waller. Lin-Manuel Miranda said that it was fun to be set with Andrew Scott while all of America was discovering “Hot Priest” in Fleabag.

I also want to give a lovely shout out to Ruth Wilson, who did a great job of curating her background to subtly feature her character’s deamon.

September can’t come soon enough if this panel teased enough of the show’s second season.

Below are a few more promotional shots released by HBO ahead of the second season.

The show will return in September on HBO in the US, and BBC1 in the UK. Come back to see more of our coverage from Comic Con @Home over the weekend.
