Do You Remember: The Inside

By  |

This crime drama The Inside debuted on FOX on June 8, 2005. The first and only season of this show produced 13 episodes; however, only 7 of those episodes aired in the US.

The show was originally produced by future Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow (2008’s The Hurt Locker) as a series that would center around a 23-year-old woman, Rebecca Locke, posing as a 16-year-old high school student in order to investigate a drug ring. At the time future Twilight alum Peter Facinelli was attached to also star.

The series was later redeveloped by Tim Minear (one of the men behind Angel and Firefly and an executive producer on the 9-1-1 franchise and American Horror Story) along with Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and David Nevins acting as executive producers. A few months later, Facinelli dropped out of the project as the premise about Locke was changed to her being a rookie FBI agent instead. A short time later Jay Harrington filled the gap left by Facinelli with Adam Baldwin (of Firefly fame) joining the cast.

The series ended up following rookie FBI Agent Rebecca Locke (Rachel Nichols, who went on to star in Alias, Continuum and The Man in the High Castle), who joined the Los Angeles Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) after the death of a previous member. While she proved to be a brilliant investigator, she had a secret known only to herself and the VCU’s mysterious director Virgil “Web” Webster (veteran actor Peter Coyote): that as a 10-year-old girl, Rebecca was kidnapped from her home and held captive for 18 months. Astonishingly enough, no one found and rescued her; she escaped the trauma all by herself, setting a fire and escaping in the resulting chaos. Webster manipulated Rebecca’s experience on each case, using the insight she gained through it to establish the mindset of the victim—and the criminal.

A subplot to the story was the moral struggle between Webster, who seemed willing to use Rebecca’s gift to catch the “unsub” at all costs, and Rebecca’s partner Paul Ryan (Jay Harrington, who later appeared in Better Off Ted and S.W.A.T.), who viewed himself as the voice of conscience in the battle for Rebecca’s soul. Additionally, Webster’s past is very much unknown, leaving viewers wondering exactly how much he had in common with the perpetrators he pursued.

Adam Baldwin, who went on to star in Chuck and The Last Ship), played Danny Love, an ex-marine who was blunt and crude, but not without his own morals and has a certain rapport with Agent Melody Sim. He often lead assaults on crime scenes.

Katie Finneran, who went on to star in Bloodline, Why Women Kill and Brockmire, played Melody “Mel” Sim, a quick-witted, intelligent and friendly agent who often mourned her lack of social life and shared a friendship with Danny.

The late actor Nelsan Ellis (True Blood) played Carter Howard (Nelsan Ellis), the technological go-to guy of the group.

The seven episodes that did air over the summer of 2005 were unfortunately aired out of order, causing low ratings, which lead to the show being abruptly cancelled in July.

Among the guest stars who appeared in the episodes that actually aired during the show’s brief summer on the air included:

Michael Emerson – who has, of course, gone on to work on shows like Lost, Person of Interest and Evil;
Zeljko Ivanek – who went on to work on Hereoes, Damages and Madam Secretary;
William Mapother – who is not only Tom Cruise’s cousin but also well-known guest actor who has appeared in shows like Lost, Grimm, Supergirl, MacGyver [and countless others];
Carrie Preston – who is best known for her work on True Blood (alongside The Inside cast member Nelsan Ellis) [and is married to Michael Emerson];
Jason Beghe – who is the star of Chicago P.D.; and,
Darby Stanchfield – who has gone on to appear in NCIS and Castle and star in Scandal and Locke & Key.
