Good Witch Recap: “The Tableau”
The new episode of Good Witch primarily focused on the 225th Anniversary of Grey House and the preparation for the celebration that was soon to happen at the grand ole home. In fact, Cassie was setting up numerous paintings made by her ancestor Nathaniel Merriwick, all of which were of landscapes except for one particular painting that depicted himself, his wife and daughter as well as three other people, who not even Cassie knew their identities.
After seeing that painting, and talking about seeing a tableau vivant during her recent outing at a mayors conference, Martha suggested to Cassie they bring that painting to life as part of Grey House’s big anniversary. Of course, Martha took the reins – finding the necessary props as acting as director of the living picture display that would take place in two days time.
As the episode continued, viewers learned that Adam has been avoiding his physical therapy, which caused Sam and Stephanie to both be a bit upset with him, as Adam believed it wouldn’t make a difference. But, thankfully after a stern talking to by Stephanie, Adam returned to his therapist and soon enough began to see some improvement.
Elsewhere, Martha was pleased to tell Stephanie that their long awaited greenhouse was finally approved, and Stephanie was put in charge of the committee. Unfortunately, that posed a problem between the two women. First, Martha turned down Stephanie’s request for a non-approved color to paint her home (who knew that a town could restrict paint colors to only four options?!) and then Stephanie pointed out to Martha she was not signed up for a plot in the greenhouse, and thus wouldn’t be assigned one. Time for Cassie to intervene, right? Sort of, as she suggested they try to compromise.
At first, a compromise didn’t work, but when Martha needed to find the last remaining prop for the tableau vivant production – a handful of heather – she discovered some at the greenhouse in Stephanie’s plot. The women were then able to come to a compromise: Martha would relent on the house color while Stephanie would give Martha some heather and half of her plot at the greenhouse.
In light of her involvement with Abigail and Donovan breaking up (it wasn’t exactly her fault but her intuitive dream did set things into motion), Joy was finally down about her premonitions. Being the thoughtful cousin, Cassie gave Joy a pearl necklace that had been passed down generation to generation within the Merriwick family to give Joy a new perspective.
In point of fact, the necklace seemed to give Joy a break from her intuition, but also blocked her in being able to find the right blind date for co-worker Carter and anything else for that matter. Joy picked Hayley – the latest guest at Grey House (who is a social media influencer who lost her internet connection and got a chance to actually live life without her phone for most of the episode) – and Carter set up Joy with Andy, an accountant. Neither match was quite right [after all Carter described Joy perfectly when talking about who his perfect date would be], and once the necklace was off Joy’s neck, she seemed to be back to feeling like herself again.
While moving items out of the storage room, which Joy is transforming into a meditation room, the cousins discovered another painting, but not one by Nathaniel Merriwick. It was actually by P. Connelly, who signed the name with a crescent moon, a moon that caused Abigail and Donovan to break up. The hunt was on to find a descendant of that artist. Enter Donovan’s mom, who actually helped him learn that P. Connelly was Priscilla Connelly, sister-in-law to Roderick Davenport (the man who enacted the curse with a traveler’s help – and that traveler was Priscilla).
NOTE: Dottie, Donovan’s mom, paid a visit to Abigail at her flower shop where they seemed to actually come to terms with each other, finding common ground – the fact they both cared about Donovan – and even more so Dottie admitted that she has actually become quite fond of Abigail.
Sadly, Donovan learned there weren’t any Connelly descendants and all seemed to be lost until he looked at an old deed pulled from the Middleton archives for the tableau vivant. The deed was from Roderick to Priscilla (perhaps as payment for the curse) so while there aren’t any Connelly descendants perhaps there was something left behind at the property on the deed. Yet another clue for the couple to follow.
Lastly, Sam decided to take up a paintbrush, following in Nathaniel Merriwick’s footsteps – well at least sort of. His painting wasn’t quite as elaborate as any of those done by Nathaniel – it was of him and Cassie standing in front of Grey House because as they said “Grey House isn’t Grey House without us – but Cassie told him that “it’s a masterpiece,” sharing that perhaps “200 years from now someone will look at (the picture) and be inspired” the same way they were by Nathaniel’s portraiture.
