Women of the Week
Women of the Week
Typically, we tend to select women from scripted television shows for our Women of the Week picks. Given current events, we thought that it was important to highlight women making a difference in the world at the moment and our latest edition of nominees are a reflection of that. Please read on to find out who our latest Women of the Week are and why…
Nominated by Leah: Jameela Jamil
I think we have to highlight all Jameela Jamil does. She is a voice for everyone. Anyone oppressed by something, POC, LGBT, Weight. Doesn’t matter. She stands up and says something. She has a podcast under her @i_weigh tag and it is inspiring and heartbreaking to hear everyone’s stories.
Nominated by Roz: the queens of We’re Here on HBO/HBO Max.
I want to highlight the queens of We’re Here on HBO/HBO Max. I sat down last week and watched the first five episodes, looking at a variety of people accepting the challenge to perform in drag in small towns across the country, but the finale got me. Faced with stopping production because of COVID-19, the queens took to their homes and shared their stories of starting in drag, as well as highlighting all the people who they highlighted in the other five episodes.
While Pride month is taking a backseat to the protests, I found the series a powerful story of looking for acceptance in a variety of places and with mixed results.
