ONE CHICAGO: 10 Things About CHICAGO MED 5×19, CHICAGO FIRE 8×19 and CHICAGO P.D. 7×19

By  |

A lock-down, a punch up (or two), a wedding and a kidnapping – it was a busy week in the ONE CHICAGO world this week! Join us as we dive in with 10 highlights from CHICAGO MED “Just a River in Egypt”, CHICAGO FIRE  “Light Things Up” and CHICAGO P.D. “Buried Secrets”…

1. Lockdown at Firehouse 51

At the start of this week’s CHICAGO FIRE episode Firehouse 51 are alerted of a call and rush out to attend to it, when they find that their firehouse doors are chained so they can’t get out. What?! The people who have chained them in missed the back door so the team rush out of the firehouse and find some protesters chained to their vehicles and have no intention of moving. C’mon guys, there are people who need help! It turns out these protesters are fighting against the closure of Firehouse 87 and as riled up as 51 are, Chief Boden warns them to stand down. More protesters arrive and take over the inside of the Firehouse, but even with the cops, headquarters rep and the local alderman all being called to rectify the situation (but just passing the buck really), things get seriously out of hand. Punches are thrown and groom to be Cruz, ends up knocked out and a battle scar. Things escalate even more when one of the protesters collapses from his having posted himself against the rigs. 51 rally together to save him and millennials Gallo and Ritter capture it on film and post to social media. Despite Boden being anti social media earlier in the day, it actually ends up helping the protesters cause and Boden rethinks his stance. Seems like a much more effective method than these protesters original efforts or the time Herrmann lit a couch on fire!

2. Brett the caregiver?

Following the death of her bio-mom, Julie last episode, Brett is now concerned about Julie’s husband Scott and her new baby sister. Brett is doing her best to give Scott space but also letting him know that she is there for him if he needs anything. He finally reaches out to her, showing up at the Firehouse during the protest and tells her that he can’t take care of the baby and needs Brett to take her otherwise he will put the baby up for adoption. Brett is understandably stunned and ends up hiding out in Casey’s office while she processes what just happens. Casey finds her and she breaks down and confides in him that she misses Julie and can’t take care of the baby. Casey comforts her and tells her that he’s there for her whatever she decides. There could have been a moment there but the pair are interrupted by Kidd. Later on Brett visits the hospital and finds a nervous Scott pacing about. She reassures him that he can look after the baby – he wouldn’t be pacing outside the hospital room if he didn’t care.

3. Cruz and Chloe get married

Cruz’s big day is here and the guys are on shift after his bachelor party. We’re not sure what exactly went down but Severide is struggling at the start of shift, but Cruz is pretty chipper and politely declines Boden’s offer to call in a floater so Cruz can have the day off. We wonder if Cruz was regretting his decision when he gets injured. As sweet as it is to see Cruz and Chloe get married, it’s also bittersweet as Cruz s reminded that his best friend, Otis, who would have been his best man, isn’t around to be a part of it all. Kidd tries to comfort him and tells Cruz that Otis will be there with him. Just not the way he envisioned.

4. Ethan and Crockett come to blows

Over on CHICAGO MED, Ethan is still sulking about Crockett and April and it’s having an effect on the workplace. First he isn’t happy seeing April and Crockett working together in the Hybrid OR, to the point where April suggests that Crockett finds a new Hybrid OR nurse but he shoots that idea down. Then when Crockett is treating a patient who is on a ventilator and involved with a case with Ethan’s patient, Ethan asks him to temporarily remove the patient off it so he can speak to her. For the sake of his own patient’s welfare, Crockett refuses and Ethan gets all huffy. Later he goes behind Crockett’s back and tries to speak the patient. (He needs to find out if his teen patient is suicidal and Crockett’s patient was the only witness on the scene.) Needless to say, Crockett is not impressed and confronts Ethan when he finds out, telling him this is more than their patient and is because of April. He tells Ethan to just hit him to feel better and Ethan does. (Although he does seem remorseful afterwards.)

5. Ethan and April split up

With Choi sleeping on the couch, it’s honestly no surprise that by the end of the episode, Ethan and April break up. April comes home and Ethan is sitting on the couch. He tells her that it was easy to see Crockett as the problem but the truth is that they were having problems before she kissed their colleague. Ethan tells her that the problem is whatever it is that she wants, it isn’t him. She tries to protest, but he gets up and picks up a bag and starts to head out He tells her that he’s going to stay somewhere else and that she can stay there until she finds a new place. She sinks to the floor after he leaves, crying. After all the drama and crying these two have gone through, we think it’s for the best – look at how things are between Natalie and Will after they called it quits. Getting involved with a colleague is always dicey and it would be nice to see these two be happy again, even if it means them being apart.

6. Will and Hannah grow closer

In contrast to Ethan and April, the romance between Will Halstead and Hannah Asher are going well. While some might roll their eyes at another workplace romance, at least these two are being wary about whether they’re moving too fast with cute banter about him leaving his toiletries at her place. This week they’re working on a case together along with medical student Elsa Curry. Will sides with Hannah about performing a risky procedure on a pregnant woman who is also in serious stages of brain cancer and knows that this is her last chance to have a baby. Elsa, however is concerned about Hannah’s judgement and when Will defends Hannah, Elsa calls him out on it, noticing how close the pair are getting. I want to believe that Hannah genuinely wants to get her life back on track and did wonder if Elsa, being just a med student, went too far questioning two superiors’ judgement? Not to mention, she had a crush on Will a few episodes back so could these feelings also be influencing her judgement? Things aren’t helped when the patient sadly dies. Hannah confides to Will that she needs to go to a NA meeting and he takes her as Elsa watches on.

7. Maggie and Ben foster Auggie

Maggie has grown attached to Auggie, Ben’s student that was admitted to Med last episode. Auggie is still in hospital, but it looks like he’s getting new foster parents. However, when Auggie’s condition worsens and treatment is halted because the paperwork hasn’t been signed off on, Maggie steps in to fight on his behalf. She’s turned down by DCFS and Dr Lannik and it takes Auggie’s health to get even worse before he is able to be treated. It’s great news that Auggie is finally receiving the treatment he needs, but his prospective foster parents witnessed the medical emergency and realise that they can’t handle the pressure. They back out of becoming Auggie’s new foster parents. This is the nudge that makes Maggie and Ben realise that they want to be Auggie’s new foster parents.

8. Upton is still in NYC with Feds

On CHICAGO P.D., Upton is absent, having temporarily gone to the FBI in New York after Voight loaned her to them following her questionable actions last episode. She actually does appear in this week’s FBI episode if you’re missing your Upton fix. We’re not sure how long she’ll be out of Chicago for, but partner Halstead is taking care of her mail while she’s gone, as indicated by the scene between him and Platt at the start of this week’s episode.

9. Ruzek witnesses a kidnapping

CHICAGO P.D. — “Buried Secrets” Episode 719 — Pictured: (l-r) Patrick John Flueger as Adam Ruzek, Jason Beghe as Hank Voight — (Photo by: Matt Dinerstein/NBC)

Intelligence’s case of the week begins when Ruzek is outside a bar getting fresh air, when he witnesses a guy in a hoodie force a young woman into a van. Ruzek borrows a couple’s car and tries to follow the van, but ends up crashing the car when he had to swerve to avoid hitting pedestrians. It turns out the kidnapped victim is the daughter of a wealthy furniture business man, who is not as innocent as he seems. The kidnapper took his daughter as revenge, because he believed that the business man had something to do with his son’s disappearance. The businessman claims that the son was troubled, but it looks like he was trying to cover his tracks and was actually involved with the son.

10. Ruzek and Burgess moving on

At the start of the episode, Burgess wants to hang out with Ruzek after work but he already has plans. His plans turn out to be drinking alone at a bar while flirting and planning to hook up with the bartender. Then the kidnapping happens and the bartender is upset to find out the guy she thought was a city worker is actually a cop. Technically not a lie, but she’s upset anyway and reveals to Burgess that Ruzek is still hung up on his ex, not realising that she is said ex. At the end of the episode, the pair talk and Ruzek tells her he’s just trying to find things that will make him happy. They both agree that going for dinner will make them happy. Baby steps right?
