Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Roundtable: Zoey’s Extraordinary Glitch
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is still making us laugh and cry each week. Roz and Leah (and occasionally Mel) will be covering the show each week to discuss the things that were Music To Our Ears and the things that were more Nails On A Chalkboard. Join us won’t you? (Leah’s life is a little busy right now so it might just be Roz sharing her thoughts.)
“Zoey’s Extraordinary Glitch” – After receiving heartbreaking news, Zoey suffers a mysterious “glitch” in her powers.
Music To Our Ears
Roz: Switching up who is singing is a great way to keep the show fresh this far into the season. I appreciate that Zoey understands what happened this week after a few songs, but I also think that she has to process all of that news from Mitch’s appointment in some way. It’s heartbreaking to see her struggle with all of this, but it should have happened weeks ago in all honesty.
Mel: Jane Levy was brilliant. She walked us through Zoey’s terrible, no good day of mounting stress and Zoey shenanigans with the right amount of humor and disbelief to keep the plot from going off the rails. I appreciated that this reversal of who performs the heart songs didn’t automatically clarify Zoey’s life. She’s still struggling with her dad’s illness. She’s still conflicted about Simon and Max. She’s still finding her voice at work. Her life is complicated! Singing songs to reveal her innermost thoughts and feelings can help her process, like journaling, but it shouldn’t take the place of actually doing the work.
Nails On The Chalkboard
Roz: Oy Leif! I just want to punch him and his power move by sleeping with Joan. But at least it’s not just Zoey who knows he’s in this situation with Joan for the wrong reason.
Mel: Yeah, not happy with this Joan/Leif storyline. I was glad to see that he’s more invested than Joan because if this show turned Lauren Freaking Graham into some sort of desperate divorcee, we were gonna have words.
Music
Roz: “Crazy” has been one of my favorite songs for years, and it fit the opening moment of this twisted episode so well. “I Want You to Want Me” is also a classic and should be something we hear more often, even if the idea for how the song played out is less than ideal.
Mel: Zoey’s cover of “How Do I Live” broke me. Jane Levy and Peter Gallagher did a spectacular job of turning a love ballad into a heartbreaking confession from child to parent.
