THE GOOD PLACE Roundtable: Whenever You’re Ready
The Good Place concludes its final run with this episode. We have our thoughts below – be sure to tell us what you thought in the comments:
Various conversations occur between various groups of people.
We’re going to divide our thoughts on this episode into three self-explanatory categories – The Good Place, The Medium Place, and The Bad Place, plus a final category for favorite quotes or overall thoughts.
The Good Place
Roz: Mary Steenburger as the girl to teach Michael guitar was amazing; I think I finally started to cry when Michael became a human and went to earth.
Christie: Chidi teaching a class of philosophers! Tahani becoming an architect! Donkey Doug made it to the Good Place! Michael is a human! Mary Steenburgen!
I still don’t like the idea that the afterlife is finite. But after this episode I definitely feel better about “Patty.”
Cay: I loved that Michael kept his childish sense of wonder even after he’d been on Earth for years. And, of course, that all the characters ended up in a “good place” for them.
Bad Place
Cay: First, that official episode description above is so wrong!!! Also, I’ve got questions about some of those who ended up in the Good Place – Donkey Dug and Pill Boi? Everyone’s parents? Part of me would like to think that anyone can be redeemed, but another part of me needs to believe that karma is real and that people will reap what they sow. This part seemed a little too “happy ending” for me.
Roz: Why do I want to know about Mindy’s test that we didn’t see? I love that she might have finally figured out if she was for which place.
Christie: Why would Chidi ever think Eleanor would be OK with him going? I’m glad Eleanor came around but still, it’s awful. (OK, yes I’m crying right now, OK?!)
The Medium Place
Cay: Cosmic Derek was just too weird!
Christie: That Janet is almost left alone (with Tahani still around though in another place), is so sad.
Roz: Imagining Janet alone – but not – is hard to take. For the not-human who befriended so many people it has to be hardest for her to see those people leave, but maybe not leave.
Final Thoughts & Quotes We Loved
Cay: We can only hope that the afterlife works like it does at the end of this show!
Christie: “I won’t exactly know what’s going to happen after I die. Nothing more human than that! Besides texting people that you’re five minutes away when you haven’t even left the house.” I’m a mess.
Roz: I don’t think I hit the ugly crying stage until Michael got to be human and then I went to watery eyes all through. I love that the show gave us so much philosophy in the guise of a television show, but I’m going to miss this team and those characters.
