A Million Little Things Refresher {Spoiler Warning!}
Last September, a new drama debuted on ABC. A Million Little Things focused on a group of friends who are motivated to live fuller lives after the unexpected death of a close friend. That’s a definite oversimplification of this engaging mystery drama.
The series starred David Giuntoli (Grimm) as Eddie Saville; James Roday (Psych) as Gary Mendez; Romany Malco (Weeds and Think Like A Man) as Rome Howard and Ron Livingston (Loudermilk and Office Space) as Jon Dixon: four friends who met in the unlikely circumstance of being trapped inside a malfunctioning elevator. These men and their significant others were sent reeling by the very unexpected suicide of Jon. In their eyes, he was a man who seemed to have the perfect life: a devoted wife, two children and a very successful career.
As the show’s debut season played out, viewers learned a great deal about these four men and their significant others, including what caused Jon to take his life, how his death affected those in his life, and the secrets they were all keeping (lots of secrets!).
The show has often utilized flashbacks to show us both the past prior to Jon’s death and how each of the characters responded in the initial aftermath of his death. During the first season, we learned that Eddie, married to Katherine (Grace Park from Battlestar Galactica), was actually having an affair with Jon’s wife Delilah (Stephanie Szostak from Satisfaction). Delilah soon learned that she was pregnant with Eddie’s baby but everyone was led to believe Jon was the father.
It turns out that Jon wasn’t the only one in the group that was deeply troubled. Rome, married to Regina (Christina Moses from The Originals and Condor), had a mouth full of pills intending to take his own life when he was called about Jon’s suicide. Jon’s death spurred him to reconsider his situation and he finally got help for his depression, quit the job he hated to pursue his dream of becoming a film director and be by his wife’s side as she opened her own restaurant – with her business partner Delilah.
Gary, a breast cancer survivor, and the only single guy in the group, bounced around from woman to woman until he met Maggie Bloom (Allison Miller from Incorporated and Terra Nova) at a support group meeting. While we weren’t entirely thrilled with Gary initially, it soon became clear that he was in fact a great friend and supporter for all the characters and a fantastic, committed boyfriend to Maggie as she dealt with the relapse of her cancer.
Two of the biggest mystery elements of the story focused on Jon’s personal assistant, Ashley (Christina Ochoa from Blood Drive, Valor and Animal Kingdom), who hid a lot of Jon’s secrets from his wife and family, and the mysterious Barbara Morgan (Drea de Matteo from The Sopranos), who played an important part in Jon’s life [that was slowly revealed in the latter part of the debut season]. She was the lover of Jon’s best friend who died in one of the planes on 9-11 (a plane that Jon was supposed to be on and missed getting on that fated plane mere minutes before the gate closed).
The second season of A Million Little Things will see the birth of Eddie and Delilah’s baby; viewers will finally see how Katherine reacts when that little “tidbit” is revealed and how Rome and Regina will move forward with his desire to have children and her desire to not. Meanwhile, Maggie is cancer-free and she and Gary will enter “the honeymoon phase” of their relationship. There will also be more on PJ (the son of Barbara Morgan), who “knows a lot more about the group than he’s letting on.” [Source: TV Line]
At the end of the first season, Nice Girls Rueben and Cay shared questions they had about the show. We can only hope that we get answers to at least some of these questions early on in season 2.
Rueben:
Do we think Eddie and Katherine will actually get back together? Or will the baby reveal push Katherine over the edge?
How will that reveal affect all of them because you know that secret won’t stay secret between Katherine and Eddie? How will Sophie and Danny react? Will they be able to trust their mom again?
What will happen next between Gary and Maggie? Can we see them succeeding in their relationship? Will Maggie stay in remission?
How will PJ (Patrick) play into the new season? Will we see Barbara Morgan again?
What will happen between Regina and Rome given that she told him she doesn’t want to have kids, but he does? Could this break Rome?
Cay:
My big question is what is going to be the hook for next season? The baby and the resulting fall-out?
How is Katherine going to take the news from Eddie? She’s got to suspect it, deep down.
How will the news, which is bound to get out, affect everyone else as it ripples out?
Will we continue to see Barbara and presumably her son and what will they contribute to the story now that we have had the big reveal?
How bad will things get between Rome and Regina if he won’t let having kids go?
Let’s hope that the shows answers some of these questions!
A Million Little Things will air its second season premiere on ABC on Thursday, September 26 at 9/8c.
