Women Behind the Scenes Spotlight: Sarah Treem
Today’s Women Behind the Scenes spotlight is focused on theatre playwright, TV writer, producer and series creator Sarah Treem.
Sarah was born in Boston, Massachusetts, but grew up in New Hampshire, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Connecticut and North Carolina. She considers New Haven, Connecticut to be her hometown.
Sarah has been writing since she was very young, starting with poetry when she was 8 years old. When she was 12 years old, her first play won a young playwright context and was staged in Connecticut. Throughout high school and college, she continued to write, earning a B.A. from Yale College and an M.F.A. from Yale School of Drama.
Among the plays Sarah has written are “A Feminine Ending,” “Against The Wall,” “Human Voices,” and “Mirror Mirror.” Her latest play was “When We Were Young and Unafraid.” It should be noted that all of Sarah’s plays have a high percentage of female roles.
She got her start in the industry, working as a writer for the HBO series In Treatment from 2008 to 2010 before working as a writer and producer on the HBO comedy How to Make It in America. She next worked as a writer and a co-executive producer on the debut season of House of Cards before moving onto her biggest project: The Affair on Showtime. She co-created the show and has been a writer and executive producer since the debut in 2014; she even had the opportunity to direct an episode of the show’s final season. The Affair will get underway on Showtime starting on Sunday, August 25.
Sarah’s next big project will be the unitled Hedy Lamarr Project for Showtime that will star Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot as the lead character.
Her work has earned her nominations for the Humanitas Prize, Primetime Emmys and Writer’s Guild Awards (WGA), winning one WGA in 2009 for Best New Series for In Treatment, 2014 for Best New Series for House of Cards and one WGA in 2014 for Best Drama TV Series for The Affair.
Sarah currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband and their son and daughter.
