JETT: Thoughts on Episode 9 “Miljan Bestic”

Before a fateful meeting with Bestic, Jett sets in motion a plan to be free of him for good. When the two come face-to-face, Bestic reveals the origins of his feud with Charlie. As the situation becomes increasingly perilous, Jett realizes she’s in danger of losing the very thing she holds most dear

Nine episodes was not enough Jett – all of my appendages crossed they get a second season. Also, you thought episode 8 was crazy – because it was nothing compared to the finale. This episode was present tense mixed in with the 9 hours leading up to the meeting Jett had with Bestic. All of the planning Jett and friends did to get to the final showdown was really well done. Not confusing, not too much backstory, perfect mix.

Bennie
He gets to go first here because he made it out of this episode alive. Not everyone did. He didn’t have a lot of screen time, but honesty the fact that he is breathing and only has the stab would in his leg from last weeks episode is amazing.

Evans, Maria and Phoenix
That man is going to burn in a place hotter than hell. He kidnapped Alice. Maria and Phoenix did not make it easy on him though. Maria fought him from her hospital bed with more strength then I could muster on a Monday AM. I didn’t actually see Evans kill Maria, but he had a pillow over her face and it didn’t look like she was going to survive. I’m going to hold out hope she made it. Unfortunately Maria got a text from Phoenix while Evans was there looking for Alice. The text said she liked the campgrounds. Evans heads there and while Phoenix is in the woods collecting sticks for a fire Evans and a thug take Alice. Phoenix does her best to get her back. She actually out ran the car and met them at the gate to the campgrounds. She body slammed the thug and knocked him down. She tried to get Alice out of the car, but Phoenix weighs under 100 pounds and the thug wasn’t as fazed as we would have liked. Phoenix did manage to get a picture of the license plate though as the car drove away. Her dropping to her knees sobbing was heartbreaking. Phoenix had one job, and while she did do it the best anyone could, she failed. Meaning she failed Jett. Phoenix is not going to take that very well.

Bestic, Jett and Charlie
Let’s just get this out of the way now – Jett is the only one of the three that makes it to the end of the episode. That’s right Charlie and Bestic are done. Charlie got a bullet in the head from Bestic and Jett’s sniper friend Fred takes out Bestic.
Jett shows up to the meeting with Bestic and she is as cool and collected as she always is. Bestic tells him the story of his rivalry with Charlie. A story Jett already knows and she seems pretty unimpressed with him. She refuses to kill Charlie though and Bestic says that is fine, he’ll have Charlie kill her. Enter Charlie and Bennie. Bestic tells Charlie exactly how f*cked up Junior was and then shares that Jett was the one that stole the gold bricks and his car. Charlie will not be manipulated by Bestic either and I feel like he made his peace with Jett when he looked at her and said, “Two wild cards.” We get to see him saying that to her earlier in the season. He turns and looks at Bestic who shoots him in the forehead. Bennie is beside himself, but Bestic tells him to let this go and get out of there. He looks reluctant but leaves. Jett is left with Bestic and his goons – not for long though – the hitman she hired shows up and shoots everyone but Bestic and herself. Bestic takes her with him to another room and tells her he has Alice. She calls Phoenix and finds out what happened. You think there is no way she would kill Bestic with her daughter in his general possession, but Jett isn’t your average person. After learning that Bestic is actually just a middle man for a Russian named Viktor, she has her sniper friend kill Bestic anyway and then makes her escape from the hotel.

Jett and Dillon
Here is something I did not see coming – Detective Dillon is Alice’s Dad. LET ME SAY THAT AGAIN – ALICE IS DILLON’S DAUGHTER! Now why didn’t I see that coming – I don’t know – my daughter (who is an adult so don’t worry that she is watching Jett) said “well Dillon is the only white guy we saw Jett sleep with.” That’s true and that brings up something else – color is not a factor on Jett and I love that. Anyway, back to Jett and Dillon. Dillon is at the motel where Jett left him, he has a revolver and a bullet and he is playing Russian Roulette and no matter how many times he tries he is still alive. Thank goodness because Jett has that important information for him. Jett gets away from Bestic and that mess, is picked up by McKay and part way down the road actually breaks down. It has been a lot since Bestic entered her life and she has handled it all in stride. That comes to an end when she calls Dillon and share her, ‘you are the daddy’ news. We are talking actual tears and genuine emotion. Dillon agrees to help her find Alice and that is the end of the season.

Can we talk for a moment about how great everyone on this show was? The cast was phenomenal and Sebastian Gutierrez did a remarkable job both writing and directing every episode. Cinemax if you are listening I’m going to need a second season!
