The 100 Recap: “What You Take With You” and “Matryoshka”

By  |

It’s been a gut-wrenching two weeks on The 100 with Octavia seemingly coming to terms with her own inner demon and Kane making the ultimate sacrifice in last week’s episode and our main characters all fighting for their lives in this week’s episode.

First, let’s take a look at what happened last week:

Octavia survived the anomaly, but now Gabriel – in the guise of Xavier – needs to know what she saw while inside the anomaly. Unfortunately, she can’t remember. So what does Gabriel decide to do? He injects her with the dust that permeates the air around the anomaly to help her remember her experience. But what it does is give her a glimpse into her past, facing down the demon that was/is Bloodreina.

As viewers will recall, Octavia was forced to become something almost demonic while the survivors of Earth were trapped underground for all those years. She became the blood-thirsty Bloodreina, who sacrificed the weak within their group to help the strong; she pitted friends and family against one another; and now she had to pay the price. She was berated by the “ghost” of Charles Pike, who she stabbed to death – mainly because of what he did to Octavia’s lover Lincoln back in the day – and then she had to battle Bloodreina.

Octavia came out “the other side” want forgiveness and redemption; but will she get it from her brother Bellamy and the rest of survivors of Earth?

On the Eligius, Abby was dealing with the ramifications of downloading Kane into the body of Gavin. Needless to say, Kane was not happy with the compromise that Abby made for him. In fact, he was extremely upset but their new reality. And in true Kane fashion, he wanted what happened to end. The long and the short of the story was that he devised a plan with Raven and the newly-awakened Indra. They took the remaining Nightblood concoction and deliberately “trapped” Kane in the airlock of the ship with the intention of denying the Primes of Sanctum their much-needed Nightblood. The more profound result was Kane sacrificing his life along with destroying the Nightblood by allowing Indra and Raven to open the airlock, sending his new body out into space with the remaining Nightblood. His final words to an extremely upset Abby was, “This is how we get our humanity back.”

Meanwhile in the wilds of the Moon planet, Clarke and Bellamy are captured by The Children of Gabriel, but Bellamy’s hope to reason with them didn’t work – which was exactly what Josephine told him would happen. Eventually, though, Clarke/Josephine are able to escape; in fact, just as The Children of Gabriel are about to execute Josephine, she allows Clarke to come through and then Clarke was able to send out a radio call to Gabriel, telling him that she was coming to him.

Whereas in this week’s episode, it was very much focused on the battle for Clarke’s mind and body between Clarke and Josephine. It was touch and go for much of the episode because Clarke was hiding from the Sanctum guards sent to retrieve Josephine. Her hiding place was courtesy of Josephine, though, a small underground hatch where Josephine used to research; but when Clarke’s body began to have a seizure, the vines took over, slowly squeezing the life out of her. Meanwhile inside her mind the barrier between Josephine’s memories and Clarke’s memories were failing; and despite floating as many memories as possible – since they were in the dreamscape of Clarke’s brain that looked just like The Ark – it wasn’t enough.

When Clarke’s body was discovered by Octavia and Gabriel, Josephine had taken over, and it looked like she was going to win until the Sanctum guards found them. Except, there was a surprise for all of them: Bellamy had gotten loose from The Children of Gabriel, stopping the guards, leaving only Jade alive to send a message to Russell. If he wanted to see his daughter Josephine alive, he would not hurt any of Bellamy’s people. Gabriel, Bellamy and Octavia got Clarke’s body back to Gabriel’s camp near the anomaly, and despite numerous pleadings from Josephine, he removed her memory chip from Clarke’s brain, but it seemed that Clarke’s body wasn’t going to survive. But Bellamy wasn’t accepting that fate, he began CPR and even pounded on her chest; and at last Clarke came back to them.

Meanwhile in Sanctum the rest of the team, along with newly-arrived-back-on-the-Moon-Planet Abby and Raven, were all being held because of what Madi did to one of the Primes in addition to the escape by Bellamy and Josephine. Things weren’t looking good for any of them – except for Madi since she is a Nightblood – as Russell was sentencing all of them to burn on pyres, including one of their own, a man named Ty, who learned the truth about the Primes from Ryker (who was somewhat forced to tell the truth by Gaia and Echo).

Just as their fates looked sealed, Murphy, Raven and Abby convinced Russell that they could still make Nightbloods for the Primes using bone marrow. Russell scoffed at this as they had tried this very procedure with no success, but Abby told him they didn’t know the proper formula. They were allowed to live for 24 hours to provide the formula or they would be placed right back on the pyres. That bargain was not extended to Ty, who killed Russell’s wife’s Simone’s host body. [Complicated world, huh?!}

Do you think that Josephine is gone for good? Are you happy that Clarke is back or will there be complications? Do you think Abby can really make Nightblood from bone marrow? What will happen next? Please share your thoughts in our comments section below.
