Comic-Con 2019: Amazon takes us inside Carnival Row, The Boys, The Expanse
It’s Preview Day at San Diego Comic-Con and the Nice Girls are off to a running start thanks to Amazon Prime Video and their gigantic, amazing activation for three new (to Amazon) series. Amazon Prime Video has gotten the hang of this Comic-Con activation idea and as you can see from the photos below the Nice Girls had ALL of the fun!
Carnival Row
Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne star in the Amazon Original series Carnival Row, a Victorian fantasy world filled with mythological immigrant creatures. Feared by humans, they are forbidden to live, love, or fly with freedom. Premieres August 30 on Amazon Prime Video.
The Carnival Row activation was a hit with the Nice Girls!
From Lisa: Carnival Row was my favorite of the activations. When you enter, you’re asked if you want to be a creature or a human. Once you choose – the Nice Girls chose to be creatures – you enter a marketplace where humans and mythological creatures mingle before being ushered into a nightclub. In the burlesque room, we saw a singer and dancer who were very talented and occasionally fairies would pull one of us into secret rooms to share a secret! At the end, we got to take a cool photo op with wings where you feel like you’re flying. It was a lot of fun! The costumes and makeup were really good, I felt like I was in a different world. I’m definitely more interested in seeing Carnival Row now.
From Sarah: Carnival Row (by far my favorite) took us to a whole other world full of creatures and humans. Very on topic with the times, there are tensions with the creatures being the immigrants and the humans having all the rights. After being let into a market place and interacting with cops and fairy marketplace people, we are let into a secret room where we get to see a fairy burlesque show and hear a few songs (all the actors on this one are so so skilled!). The fairies grabbed a few people in the group and lead us into other rooms and showed us fun little secrets – this is an activation I think if you did more than once you’d find more stuff each time!
The Boys
THE BOYS is an irreverent take on what happens when superheroes, who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods, abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It’s the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about “The Seven,” and their formidable Vought backing. Premieres July 26 on Amazon Prime Video.
From Lisa: I was most excited for The Boys because I have seen the pilot and enjoyed it. The Boys activation gave a great glimpse into the pilot episode of the show. You got to help cover up a crime scene and again the actors were stellar.
The cool thing about The Boys activation is that there is a secret comic book store that you have to know a secret code to enter. Once you’re inside, you can look at the old comics they have and throw darts to win prizes and I got the bullseye twice! That never happens to me! I won two comic books! They take a Polaroid of you and put it on the wall and you get to sign it like you’re famous, too.
From Sarah: The Boys was also a BLAST. We are on the scene of a crime that just occurred and asked to help figure out what happened so we can destroy the evidence. In a world where superheroes are the villains (crashing through small businesses, killing people accidentally in battles, etc.) The Boys are there to fight back. This one has a crazy shock twist at the end. Also for The Boys, there was a mini scavenger hunt that led us to a secret comic book shop!
The Expanse
The disappearance of rich-girl-turned-political-activist Julie Mao links the lives of Ceres detective Joe Miller (Thomas Jane), accidental ship captain James Holden (Steven Strait) and U.N. politician Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo). Amidst political tension between Earth, Mars and the Belt, they unravel the single greatest conspiracy of all time. Season 3 now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
From Sarah: The Expanse activation had us running around on dirt landscape searching for clues to a crash while dealing with tensions from the locals all up until there were some explosions and chaos and we were evacuated!
From Lisa: It was intense! The actors did such a great job and we got some excellent swag.
Content Warning: The Boys and Carnival Row activations are for people over the age of 18. There are very mature themes and bad language so they are not for children.
