Burden of Truth Recap: “Never Face the Hangman”
The penultimate episode of the second season of Burden of Truth aired on Sunday night. Time was running out for Billy and Luna to find a way to prove Luna’s innocence in the murder of David Hanley. They know there was another girl seen at the motel, but the eyewitness is Billy’s unreliable brother Shane. It was revealed in last week’s episode that Shane has some serious problems, and in this latest episode it was believed that Shane could be suffering from schizophrenia. Needless to say, given this preliminary diagnosis Shane will not be a good witness for the defense.
What’s more Joanna needed to figure out who could have been in her father’s motel room the night of his death and why. Working with the thought that there really was another girl – or at least somebody else – at the motel, and after studying the crime scene photos, realizing that her father’s laptop had been tampered with, she went to the only person who could help her: her former client Noah.
In doing so, she had to return to the city, finding Noah and his girlfriend Mara in hiding because, of course, there was an arrest warrant out for him. Mara is naturally worried about him, and Joanna hoped, despite their last minute where she referred him to other counsel, he would still help her with her father’s laptop.
Help her he did, but their hide-out was somehow discovered, setting all three of them on the run. Noah heading off by himself, leaving Mara and Joanna together. Joanna did one thing smart: she left her recently encrypted cell phone inside of Noah’s backpack. That phone led Mara and Joanna to the airport where Noah seemingly was able to get out of Canada [but did he, really?]
Returning back to the home that Noah and Mara shared, Mara told Joanna that she could help hack David’s laptop to get the information Joanna needed. But the bigger revelation was that Joanna began to suspect that Mara was more than she seemed because it appeared that she placed the call to the authorities that brought cops to their hide-out and she has a California driver’s license. During Joanna’s own investigation she learned that an American had been watching the motel during the week before David’s death. Could it be possible that Joanna has found her father’s killer?
Elsewhere in the episode Billy was dealing with his spiraling brother, taking matters into his own hands. He egged his brother on, making Shane punch him in the face, which allowed Billy to have Owen arrest Shane – basically for assault – which would allow Billy to have his brother held in police custody, and then hopefully get the mental health help that he so desperately needs.
There is only one episode left so will Joanna be able to find proof about Mara? Did Mara really kill David? What will Billy do next about Shane? Will Joanna and Billy be able to prove Luna’s innocence? What do you think will happen? Please share your thoughts below.
