JETT: Thoughts on Episode 3 “Pheonix”

By  |

Jett brought us more backstory while moving the story in the present along. See what we thought below.

Jett looks back at the origins of her relationship with Phoenix and is ordered by Evans to track down Blair – or else.

Backstory
I love a good backstory, especially when it is intertwined in the episode in such a way that it doesn’t feel jumpy. It makes you feel more connected to the characters in the present. To no ones surprise Jett and Phoenix met up in prison. Thankfully for Phoenix because she was not going to make it and saving someones life comes with apparently a lifetime of gratitude. So when Phoenix needs her gunshot wound tended to she lays low at Phoenix’s place. After all Phoenix is a hooker that is too good to be true with not enough ambition. It’s a winning combination. My one question about Phoenix is Jett’s multiple references to her brother. Who is Phoenix’s brother I wonder? Someone we have met?

Jacinto Salas
We get a glimpse of the guy Junior is framing. Men sure do love their Mothers and I’m okay with that, but I am curious why he didn’t have private care for his Mother after surgery. The fact that he didn’t allows Bennie and his buddy to infiltrate the hospital and leave behind a threat for Jacinto. This will not end well.

Bennie
Speaking of Bennie – he is still watching the wardens wife – except his buddy tells him to knock it off and he does. That is actually bad because the warden stops by. He is wasted and angry and beats most of the life out of her. I sincerely hope Bennie finds out and beats most of the life out of the warden!

Jett
I can not count the ways I love this character – there are too freaking many! She is so calm under pressure. There are no hysterics or wasted movements. She is just quietly bad ass. Or as Phoenix puts it, “You are like a mute f*cking Avenger.”

Remaining Thoughts
Dempsey Bryk (Heartland) as the crack selling smartass was brilliant. He had the whole Ponyboy look down and his unwavering confidence in the face of Jett’s presence was fantastic. In real life Dempsey is Greg Bryk’s son. (He plays Milan Bestic) and speaking of family the ending scene with Jett, Maria and Jett’s daughter in the bed where their heartbeats all synced was such a great moment. Family is definitely what you make it.

P.P.S. Have you all seen Out of Sight? It’s a Steven Soderbergh movie based on an Elmore Leonard novel. The camera work on Jett has an Out of Sight Soderbergh feel and the writing is very Elmore Leonard-esque. Elmore Leonard has written some of the greatest characters and you could easily drop the character of Jett in any of his works and she would hold her own. The fact that Carla played Karen Sisco in the short lived TV show by the same name, based on the character Jennifer Lopez plays in Out of Sight is not lost on me either.

Follow along here for our continued coverage through the season.
