Good Witch 2-Night Season Premiere: “The Forever Tree”
The 5th season of Good Witch aired its two-night season premiere on the Hallmark Channel on Sunday and Monday nights, finally giving the viewers what they have been longing for since the final episode of season 3: Sam and Cassie got married!! Granted that much anticipated event didn’t happen until the last part of the two-night event, but it was well worth the wait.
As the first scene opened, Cassie and Sam were clearing out a “junk” room in Grey House for Nick to move into, albeit briefly IF he should ever get around to completing some college applications. It has been apparent since last season that Nick has been very lacked in making plans for his future beyond high school, but more on that later.
Despite several failed attempts to get married, it seemed that the event was going to happen in two days at the location of Sam and Cassie’s first date: the ranch where they went horseback riding together. Their family and friends were knee-deep in preparations at the ranch’s “barn” where the wedding was to take place with Martha, naturally, seemingly at the helm of the arrangements while Cassie’s cousin Abigail was providing the flowers from her very own shop while Cassie’s best friend Stephanie was providing the food from her very own bistro.
To make the event even more special for Cassie, her foster brother Vincent – who has been MIA for the past ten years – actually arrived at Grey House to attend the wedding. Cassie was obviously very pleased at his unexpected arrival at her ancestral home but Sam was a bit lukewarm towards him. Vincent had come a long way since their days in foster care together, being in charge of a fleet of ships for a billionaire; but sadly, later in the first hour it was revealed that Vincent was losing his job. This loss hit Vincent very hard as it made him feel like a failure so much so that he almost left town, but because of a well-placed stuffed animal inside his bag [a gift that Cassie had given him when he was 10 years as she was embarking on college], he returned to Middleton to be present at her wedding. Oddly enough, he even caught the wedding bouquet at the ceremony.
Elsewhere in the two-night event, a number of calamities befell the wedding preparations from a melted wedding cake topper, to the reverend, who was to preside over the wedding, falling ill because of an allergy to the hay at the barn where the wedding was to be held, to Cassie’s wedding dress being eaten by moths, caused Grace a great deal of concern that perhaps her negative energy was the source. Of course, her mother assured that wasn’t the case, and after a heartfelt talk between Cassie and Grace at the latter’s favorite spot, which she shared with her late father, Grace seemed to have a more positive attitude.
Some new faces were also introduced in the premiere: one being Adam, the chaplain at the local hospital, who not only ended up officiating the wedding but also caught the eye of Stephanie and Donovan Davenport, the Mayor of neighbor town Blairsville, who caught the ire of Abigail, who took over the role of Mayor of Middleton from Martha when it was revealed her home was actually within the boundary of Blairsville. The other new face was a young horse rider Lindsay, who caught the attention of Nick. It was because of their shared interest in video games that led Nick to finally figuring out what he wanted to do beyond high school: design video games.
Because of Lindsay’s introduction, Nick and Grace discovered a new white horse at the ranch who seemed very unsettled about something, but no one could quite figure out what was the problem, but the horse certainly seemed interested in Grace. Each time she briefly visited the horse, he seemed to calm down and approach her only to be unsettled when someone else would approach. Eventually the horse leapt the fence at the ranch, running into the woods surrounding Middleton.
Throughout the episode the Forever Tree was discussed as being the site of the wedding between Cassie’s ancestors, the original owner of Grey House, and her betrothed. It became Sam’s intention to find that tree, as the location of the old tree had long been lost in time, in the hopes that he and Cassie could be married there too. It wasn’t until that escaped horse appeared at the barn a short time before the wedding was to take place, leading Sam and Grace to the tree. When Cassie and her brother Vincent arrived at the barn, Grace had a surprise for her. After getting dressed, Cassie was led to the Forever Tree where all of their guests and Sam were waiting for her.
The wedding was a beautiful ceremony with Sam and Cassie exchanging heartfelt vows and their rings then sealing their marriage with a kiss followed by hearty cheers from their assembled family and friends [which thankfully included step-son Brandon and his wife Tara; although it was disappointing that step-daughter Lori could not be there]. In the final scene, Sam and Cassie were sitting at the base of the Forever Tree, sharing a quiet moment together before they stood up to carve their initials in the tree just like her ancestor and her husband did many centuries earlier. It was then that the roaming white horse appeared followed by a second white horse. It would seem the run-away horse was looking for his mate. Could those horses have been the spirits of Cassie’s ancestor and her husband, leading Sam and Grace to the tree so Cassie and Sam could marry beneath it just they did?
