Burden of Truth Recap: “Salesman, Cheats and Liars”

By  |

Season two of Burden of Truth got underway on The CW on Sunday night, finding Joanna Chang nee Joanna Hanley now working in corporate transactions for a law firm in Winnipeg, but still in contact with Millwood lawyer Billy Campbell, as they are to be presented with an award for Case of the Year for their win over Matheson Steel.

As the episode opened, Joanna was rushing toward her car and seemingly heading home except her car started to malfunction. First the brakes gave out, causing her vehicle to nearly colliding with another car only to come to a dead stop in the middle of a darkened part of the city. A scary voice came over her radio only to have the scene time jump back 18 hours.

Joanna’s boss approached her about a new case, which Joanna didn’t want to work on, but she was given no choice. The new case dealt with hacktivist Noah Achari (recurring guest star Varun Saranga from Wynonna Earp and Carter), a computer prodigy, who was being pressured by Novatech, his former employer, to close down an app he created. Noah vehemently refused to do so despite an injunction (and many other filings lodged against him) by them. The problem was Novatech was actually owned by a very powerful defense contractor. [More on that shortly.]

Elsewhere, Billy is still living in Millwood after the big court win, but the town is dying, and he is doubting how he can save the town. He was also still in contact with Taylor Matheson – even though he told her disgraced father that he didn’t know where the young girl was living now that she left her divorcing parents and her hometown behind. Oh, and now Billy has to contend with his brother Shane…who was an obvious unwelcome guest if the siblings greeting was any example.

Officer Owen Beckbie was also still on the police force in Millwood, trying to keep the peace while putting up with bigoted and corrupt co-workers. The latest issue was a string of local store robberies that two of Owen’s fellow officers were blaming on “gang punks” [meaning the Native American kids in the town]. Owen went in search of some of those kids, catching one of them – who was involved in the robberies. Being the good copy, and having experience being the kid who caused trouble in his past – he let the boy go, asking that they give the stolen items back. He gave them a second chance; let’s just hope they take it.

Also, Molly Ross and Luna Spence are living together in a rather grand apartment all thanks to the settlement money Molly received from the Matheson Steel case. And while Molly has been “twitch” free for 3 months and is settling into her new life, Luna seemed a bit lost. In fact while they were out at a party, Luna left early, walking home on her own. During her walk she encountered members of the Bear Clan, a Native American night patrol group. It will be no surprise that group will become something important to Luna otherwise it wouldn’t have been included.

In the end, it was revealed that the defense contractor wanted to weaponized Noah’s app, and – of course – Noah’s life was in danger; meaning now that she’s on the case, Joanna’s life was in danger too. That’s the reason for her car going out of control and that creepy radio warning to her. She needs to drop the case or else.

What are your thoughts on the new case for Joanna? How do you see Billy getting pulled into Joanna’s case? How much focus do you think will be given to Molly, Luna and Taylor? Do you want to see more stories about those three girls? Please share your thoughts below.
