LUCIFER Roundtable: Everything’s Okay

By  |

Lucifer is back! We were pretty worried last year when Fox cancelled the show starring our Future Fake Husband, but then Netflix divinely intervened and gifted us with a season four.

Netflix has dropped the whole season, as they do, but we will be recapping an episode a week as to get the full season experience.

Join us as we use our new ratings system known as SASSY – S(tupid), A(wesome), S(o) S(o) and Y(Your Thoughts):

STUPID

Melissa: It pains me to say it, but I was not feeling Dr. Linda in this episode. She felt…unnatural. The final scene with Maze and Amenadiel was more like the old Dr. Linda, so perhaps the stiffness was her missing them?

Cay: I thought that both Dr. Linda and Chloe felt wrong in this episode, especially in the beginning. I couldn’t put my finger on quite what it was, though. I guess “stiffness” is as good a description as I can come up with. Maybe for Chloe, it was purposeful, trying to show us how uncomfortable she felt with Luci? If that was the case, then why did it at some point go back to the show’s normal right before the big reveal that Chloe and Luci are not necessarily on the same side?

Lisa: Luci constantly reminding Chloe that he was the devil got to be a little over the top. We get it…you’re the devil.

Leah: Right Lisa? It was super excessive. It took me out of the show a couple times, which I didn’t appreciate.

Karen: I gotta agree with you guys. Alright already, he let her in on the secret. No need for the REALLY long telegraph.

AWESOME

Melissa: There were so many excellent moments in this episode! Every scene with Amenadiel was a stand out for me: erroneously thinking Maze and Dr. Linda were fighting over him, asking Lucifer if he needed help after Chloe saw his true face, choosing to make Los Angeles his home, giving Dan comfort. All of that goes in my pro column. The scene with Lucifer preventing the Witness Protection guy (Sasha Roiz!) was very well done. I liked all of the moments when Lucifer was more intense. It’s like now that Chloe knows who he is and has accepted it (to Lucifer’s knowledge), he can be his authentic self around her. It’s not that much more than who/what he was before, which makes the subtleness of Tom Ellis’ portrayal even more awesome.

Cay: I appreciated Sasha Roiz (Grimm) guest starring as a bad cop (I feel like he’s got a type…) and I loved both the scene where Luci was trying to convince Ella and also the scene with Maze and Trixie. Except for the implication that Chloe is trying to keep the two apart because of whatever she and the priest have planned. I really like when the show brings deeper theology and morality in versus just the more superficial “haha, I’m really the devil” kind of stuff.

Lisa: The fact that we have a season four is awesome in itself! Holla! My favorite part was Maze and Trixie’s reunion hug! I love those two together and seeing them reunite made me excited to see what they will be up to this season. I also loved Luci singing creep at the beginning! I love seeing him at a piano.

Leah: Dr. Linda punching Maze and Amenadiel thinking it was over him. That cracked me up. I’m good with any scene Dr. Linda is in. She always brings truth and enlightenment.

Karen: Getting the Maze we know and love back was THE. BEST. I’m glad she can be “friends” with all the humans again.

SO-SO

Melissa: Chloe is part of some, what, secret mission to kill Lucifer? I’ve only watched the first episode so far and I want to have faith that this storyline will turn out well, but we’ve been burned before. Right now my expectations are pretty low – Chloe gets an active storyline even if it turns out to be a mess? Crossing my fingers on this.

Cay: I’m confused – is Luci mortal, or immortal around Chloe now? He’s clearly still immortal when she’s not around, but he cut his hand stopping the US Marshall from escaping and she wasn’t even that close. Yet, when they were walking around together, he acted like he was bulletproof. And weren’t his wings covered in blood in the last scene at the end of last season’s finale?

Lisa: Honestly, I was so excited just to be watching Lucifer I can’t think of a so-so moment. I think this first episode of season 4 was pretty damn good!

Leah: Mine was Chloe and the priest at the end. Really? Come on, not cool.

Karen: I loved it. There were a few parts that maybe reiterated things, but overall, a good start! I think the priest thing is so we have a reason to be okay with Eve.

YOUR THOUGHTS

Melissa: It’s good to be back! This first episode felt a lot more like season 1 Lucifer, which is the best in my opinion. It also feels richer both in storytelling and actual budget. I’m excited to see what the creative team did without the restrictions of FOX and network TV, and with a smaller episode count (one of the reasons season 1 worked so well).

Cay: It’s good to have Lucifer back, although I feel like it took this episode a while to knock off the rust. As much as I hate the idea on one hand, Chloe secretly trying to betray Luci makes for good drama.

Lisa: That twist at the end? Wow! I thought it was strange that Chloe wasn’t more freaked out by seeing Luci’s real face, but I didn’t see that end coming. What are she and the pastor up to? What will this mean for Lucifer and Chloe and how long before he catches wind of her intentions? Juicy! I love it!

Leah: Overall happy with the episode. The visuals while Lucifer was playing piano at the beginning and the camera work was really fantastic. Glad it’s back!

Karen: OMG right Leah? The timelapse scene was seamless. Besides the darker tone, cinematic quality, and… well, bum, it was the Lucifer I remember and LOVED.
