Being a Mom is Hard: the Struggles of TV Moms

By  |

We all know that being a mom can be a tough job, even on the best days. Whether it’s a never-ending series of comical disasters or a bad guy that just won’t quit, TV moms handle more than their fair of…poo. In honor of Mother’s Day, the Nice Girls are taking a look at some mom’s that just can’t seem to catch a break.

Erica Shepard on The Enemy Within
Actress: Jennifer Carpenter

Erica betrayed four coworkers, resulting in their deaths, to save her daughter. Something she can’t tell her daughter for fear her daughter will not be able to handle the idea that people she knew died so she could live. Now she is trying to start over with her daughter, seeing her in short supervised meetings in a jail cell. It’s a lot for both of them. (Cara)

Jessica Huang on Fresh Off the Boat
Actress: Constance Wu

Raising three boys is not easy, especially when you are the disciplinary type with high expectations and your oldest son is quite the slacker. Now that her oldest son Eddie is 16 years old, we have seen him be a lot more defiant and go against Jessica this season – he even moved out (temporarily) at one point! Even her sweet youngest son Evan aka the high achieving golden child, has started to develop his own opinions and is no longer so eager to obey to his mommy’s every command. If there’s anything that this latest season of Fresh Off the Boat has proved, it’s that raising three teenage boys is no easy feat. (Ange)

Jen Harding on Dead to Me
Actress: Christina Applegate

When the series begins, Jen is reeling from the sudden death of her husband. She’s trying to keep it together for their two sons, Charlie and Henry, but teenager Charlie certainly isn’t making it easy. As the truth of the Hardings’ life comes to light, and with the addition of a new best friend hiding some pretty major secrets herself, being a mom is increasingly complicated for Jen. (Mel)

Marissa Wiegler on Hanna
Actress: Mireille Enos

Here me out on this, sure, she killed a bunch of babies, but it’s obvious that Marissa has reformed. She’s not Hanna’s real mother, but even though she’s supposed to be hunting Hanna down, she repeatedly lets her slip through her fingers. She’s trying hard to bond with her partner’s son, and it is not an easy job. *spoilers ahead* She ultimately ends up putting her own career and even life at risk working to protect Hanna and eventually helps Hanna and Girl 249 escape.

Which long-suffering TV moms do you think might need to catch a break?

Cara spends way too much time thinking about subtext, and the puns are always intended. When not watching TV, she can generally be found with her nose in a book.
