WHISKEY CAVALIER Roundtable: Hearts & Minds

By  |

This week on Whiskey Cavalier:

Frankie is forced to prove herself as a leader when Will is captured during a mission to take down an international organ harvesting operation in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Will spends his time in captivity attempting to bond with Jai, who is unreceptive, and Standish seeks Frankie’s help to improve his combat skills.

STUPID

Rueben: Two things stuck out for me. That the team didn’t figure out that the people who captured Will switched cars once the team found the black sedan. Really? You didn’t see that switch coming?! And, once again, it’s Ray thinking that Will is going to just forgive him. C’mon?!

Leah: Ray was more upset about their old boss that shot him being in the building than Will being captured. That was odd. Also – the idea that Frankie has lived this many years as a spy who I think would need to adapt to ever changing situations couldn’t pretend to act like Will (caring) long enough to be an effective boss was ridiculous. I get that she is the cold/abrupt to Will’s overly warm and fuzzy but come on!

Roz: I’ll take a little bit of Rueben and a little bit of Leah. I don’t get Ray’s not being as upset about Will being kidnapped or Frankie’s lack of social skills. Clearly Frankie can work with people (Jai) so she’s not all bad at being around people.

Cay: I’m with you ladies! While it was funny to see Frankie’s lack of people skills, it also wasn’t very believable…unless you argue that she just totally lost her cool because Will means that much to her now? Otherwise, she should have been able to be effective, if not exactly warm. You don’t have to be warm and fuzzy to be a good leader.

AWESOME

Rueben: Did the rest of you pick up on The Princess Bride moment when Will stood up after saying that he couldn’t. Even the dialogue was similar. I loved it. The best part, though, was Jai getting back at Will at 3 AM with the bug in Will’s apartment. That whole bonding moment was hysterical!! My favorite line in the whole episode was Jai commented to Will – who couldn’t hear him of course – “We have to save you so I can kill you.” Not that I wanted to see that happen, but because, well, it was pretty funny to see that play out, am I right?!

Roz: I will always love a good The Princess Bride reference, but I want to give a shoutout to the line from Ludacris. The “Move. B*tch get out the way,” is always good to me.

Leah: Rueben! My notes say, “THE PRINCESS BRIDE FOR THE WIN!” That made me very happy. I also loved Jai’s guesses about where Will grew up…Caucasian Corner or WASPington. Cracked me up.

Cay: Yep, Jai’s jokes about Will’s childhood entertained me as well. And I was so happy that the good old spy trope of a syringe full of adrenaline was *not* injected straight into Will’s heart.  I generally like a storyline with the lead in moral danger. I also like Standish trying to keep his cool undercover and Frankie kicking his butt while pretending to “train” him. Girl after my own heart!

SO-SO

Leah: It’s nitpicky but, Susan telling Will she had plans and couldn’t hang out when she was having dinner with Frankie made me scratch my head. Susan and Will are best friends. She would have just told him she was having dinner with Frankie or invited him along.

Roz: I didn’t love Jai’s choice at getting back at Will. I get that he wants to make Will pay, but 3AM after near death is one step too far for me.

Rueben: I could’ve done without the whole organ harvesting aspect, but it obviously played a big part in the story, but that kind of thing just gives me the creeps!

Cay: Yeah, so far we’ve gotten human trafficking and organ harvesting. Yikes! Good for suspense, though. I thought the Will and Frankie convo about the trophy was a bit lame. I just kept thinking of the idea of a participation trophy in kid sports…

YOUR THOUGHTS

Leah: ABC – go talk to the head of The CW (who renewed EVERY SINGLE SHOW) I’m going to need to have some more Whiskey Cavalier next season. I have been pretty happy with this season so far. I have some issues with Frankie’s character, but she is a good opposite to Will’s sugary sweet.

Roz: Frankie needs to get her own trophy so let’s see one soon, Will! I get that she needs more interpersonal skills that aren’t all about getting a job done.

Rueben: I’m glad that Frankie has loosened up enough that she was legitimately worried about Will’s safety. And how about Standish getting the upper-hand on the ringleader of the organ harvesting organization. What I’m really worried about, though, is what Will is doing in the next episode, as it looks like something really bad happens to Emma, sending Will over the edge. That’s going to be intense. Even more intense is what will happen if this show doesn’t get a 2nd season pick-up order from ABC. I really like the show and want to see it come back.

Cay: I also think the show definitely needs a second season! While ABC advertised it heavily on-air in the two weeks before the premiere, I feel like most of the people I know that would like this kind of show have no idea that it exists! They haven’t done a good job of getting the world out – I can’t do it alone!
