THE ROOKIE Roundtable: Heartbreak

By  |

On last night’s The Rookie, the episode was focused on:

The most dangerous day of the year – Valentine’s Day – has the team on high alert, and Officer Nolan invites everyone over for a party now that he is single.

Let’s dig into the episode with our new feature SASSY: S(tupid), A(wesome), S(o) S(o) and Y(our Thoughts):

STUPID

Roz: Nolan and that poor woman. I feel so bad for her that her husband died in battle, but her fixation on Nolan was too much in an episode that had so many emotional notes. Her yearning for love was good the first time, but after that it felt like a bad joke that doesn’t end.

Rueben: I have two moments of stupid to highlight. First, I agree with Roz that the woman’s fixation, after the first time, bordered on sad but I also was worried we were going to get some version of “Fatal Attraction.” Thankfully, we didn’t. The bigger stupid moment was West walking into that guy’s hospital room after getting the text from Lopez. He walked up to the guy lying on the floor to make sure he was okay. Really? I saw that set-up coming from a mile away, and he should have too.

AWESOME

Roz: I want to give all the love to Lopez and West for that situation with the man with dementia. I thought it was going to be like that poor widow, but then it took a different turn and made me nervous for Lopez and West.

Rueben: I actually liked that Bishop showed up at Nolan’s failed Valentine’s Day party. It was only a small moment, but I enjoyed that a lot. I also felt bad for Bradford. He FINALLY dealt with his wife and walked away. That seemed like a long time in coming, and it was necessary for both of them to move forward.

SO SO

Roz: What is Lopez trying to do with her beau? I get suspicion (hey I watched Veronica Mars) but that was too much in an episode that was about relationships. Theirs is still so new why does it need another hurdle that might not be overcome.

Rueben: I agree, Roz. Lopez getting out Wesley’s personal belongings, and being able to easily see his calendar (don’t people lock their phones?!) and seeing that he had dinner plans with someone called Melanie – c’mon that was just too predictable. Why do shows always use the same stale tropes?!

YOUR THOUGHTS

Roz: I wasn’t expecting this sort of episode for Valentine’s Day, but I appreciate that there is no one way to properly show your love to a partner.

Rueben: I still love that the show has great guest stars – Shawn Ashmore, Sara Rue, John Billingsley, Beau Garrett, Currie Graham. I just wish that we’d get to see a little more of the recurring characters. We finally saw more interaction between Lopez and Wesley, but I’d still like to see more of Nell (Sara Rue). Also, I found it interesting that Grey’s wife wants him to take his early retirement, but he’s not quite ready for that yet. Will we see more of that side of him?
