Nightflyers Show Creators REVEAL What Makes the Series So TERRIFYING

By  |

“The real tricky scary stuff comes from the baggage that people
brought with them.”

Set in the year 2093, Syfy’s Nightflyers is a psychological thriller which chronicles a team of scientists aboard the Nightflyer, the most advanced ship ever built, as they embark on a journey to find other life forms. Their journey takes them to the edge of the  of the solar system, and insanity. Executive Producer Gene Klein described it best by revealing “The real tricky scary stuff comes from the baggage that people brought with them. Nothing can scare you if you don’t have some flaws to exploit. The ten episode journey is about all those flaws being exploited in different ways and times.”
Regarding those flaws, viewers learn more the characters backstories as the series unfolds. Executive Producer David Bartis reveals their main focus is beyond the cheap thrill. “We are super character driven. Our tendency is always to find a way to ground it and make it emotionally relatable. That’s been our whole approach here. It has always grounded psychological horror.

“In the same way that Hal is an influence in 2001 there is an aspect of that which is revealed in the series. It is one of the main drivers of the show.”

The series is intentionally modeled after several classic Science Fiction and Horror films. At 3:58 the conversation mention such cinema greats as The Shining, 20001: A Space Odyssey, and Aliens.
David Bartis did give a giant tease when he revealed ” The 2001 aspect is something that we’ve been holding back in talking about because we don’t want to spoil it for people but, in the same way that Hal is an influence in 2001 there is an aspect of that which is revealed in the series. It is one of the main drivers of the show.” 4.37
