THE ROOKIE Roundtable: The Roundup and The Hawke
The NiceGirls took a brief break during Thanksgiving week, but we are back to do a double feature roundtable discussion on the last two episodes of The Rookie.
The Roundup (November 20):
Nolan, the rookies and their training officers get involved in a competition that pits them against each other, while Officer Lucy Chen notices Officer Tim Bradford is obsessed with winning at all costs.
The Hawke (November 27):
The team must help capture a cop and his former mentor from the academy after he becomes a fugitive following an assault; Officer Tim Bradford needs Officer Lucy Chen to learn to predict the moves of criminals in order to capture them.
Let’s dig into the last two episodes with our new feature: S(tupid), A(wesome), S(o) S(o) and Y(our Thoughts):
STUPID
Roz: It’s days like this when I wish I could ask my cousin the LAPD officer if something like a Roundup was truth or fiction. It’s awkward to watch a competition that shouldn’t be there.
When we got to this week, trying to talk Hawke down after the captain wanted to talk to him was mistake number one. I get using a conversation versus an interrogation, but this guy looked on edge from the beginning. Don’t let him use his knowledge against everyone.
Rueben: The ridiculous levels that the pairs went to in order to get points for the arrest competition in The Roundup. That just seemed reckless and somewhat irresponsible. As for The Hawke, Nolan and Bishop not realizing that Hawke was gonna make a run for it when they approached him at the motel.
Leah: I am so with Rueben. What was with the point competition? Bradford flirting with the dispatcher who then was able to just stay on for another 4 hours so he could win? How ridiculous.
Oh rookies, THEY. ALWAYS. RUN.
AWESOME
Roz: Sara Rue is a wonderful actor and I was so happy to see her pop up. I needed more light-hearted romance in this show and she was great at that.
I wish I could like more from The Hawke, but he was so over the top in looking for an out that I couldn’t take him; the one bright spot was West and that kid who was shot when we finally saw what the situation was.
Rueben: The guest star casting: Sara Rue, Currie Graham, Antwon Tanner and Harry Groener in The Roundup; and Shawn Christian and Joelle Carter in The Hawke. Also, they filmed two scenes at the building on the Warner Bros. Burbank lot where I worked for 5 years in The Roundup episode; and in The Hawke watching Bishop and Chen take Hawke down using their intelligence when Nolan and Bradford let their male egos get in the way. Oh, it was pretty cool that Chen got one up on Bradford at the end of The Hawke by taking his money clip, leaving him without any money. Too funny!
Leah: I love Sara Rue so seeing her in The Roundup was great! Even though I thought the actual competition to get the fugitives was ridiculous, the idea that the other TO’s make it so Bradford would win, when he clearly needed to was sweet. HOWEVER, the guys ego’s in The Hawke was so just too much. Come on guys, do better. I have to agree with Rueben again with the money clip. That made me laugh.
SO SO
Roz: What’s with the pick on Nolan all the time? I get that we need to root for him but this seems too excessive.
Rueben: In The Roundup, Nolan climbed up onto that billboard walkway in the hopes of arresting the guy who was vandalizing it only to have the guy grabbed him and throw them off the walkway into the airbag that was luckily beneath them, hurting his arm in the process. Really? In The Hawke, the detectives giving Nolan such a hard time. Groan!
Leah: I know this is a Nathan Fillion show. I know he has to be the center. I know the idea of a rookie being in his 40’s is “dramatic” but enough with the picking on Nolan all the time. A little of that goes a long way.
YOUR THOUGHTS
Rueben: I am continuing to losing hope in the show especially after The Roundup, but the show only somewhat redeemed itself in The Hawke. That one episode only helps so much in my overall opinion of the show, though. I was hoping for so much more.
Leah: I want this show to be a little more than it is. It isn’t terrible and I will watch it, but it isn’t so great (like I had hoped) that I will tell everyone about it.
The Rookie airs Tuesdays at 10/9c on ABC with an all-new episode set to air on December 4.
