THE ROOKIE Roundtable: “Pilot” (Debut Episode)

By  |

Nathan Fillion is back on ABC in his new drama The Rookie, which focuses on John Nolan, a forty-year-old man, who moves from his comfortable, small town life to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of being a police officer for the Los Angeles Police Department. He must navigate the dangerous, humorous and unpredictable world of a “young” cop, determined to make his second shot at life count.

Let’s dig into the debut episode with our new feature: S(tupid), A(wesome), S(o) S(o) and Y(our Thoughts):

STUPID

Roz: I could deal without that romance between Nolan and Chen – especially in the first episode – especially because it’s a May December romance and that leaves me cold so far. Work up to that relationship, if we’re going to have one, or don’t have any at all.

Leah:I MUST start getting my answers in earlier! See Roz and Rueben for EXACTLY what I was thinking.

Rueben: I have several issues: Bradford giving his junkie wife money, really?! West freezing up during that shoot-out, what the hell?! And, Nolan bolting during the shoot-out rather than staying with his TO, what was he thinking?

AWESOME

Roz: I will keep all of the female TOs and the Captain because they’re competent and that’s always awesome!

Leah:I’m not a Nathan Fillion super fan, but he does do good TV. Also, anytime there are female characters that are strong and competent, I’m in.

Rueben:For the most part, I liked Nolan thinking outside the box dealing with the issues that came up during their ‘calls,’ but the best part is the tough female Captain and the female TOs.

SO SO

Roz: That the Sergeant has to be such a dick. I get we need a sort of villain, but meh.

Leah: Just one time I’d like to see a show without a super villainous dick of a character. It’s a little much right off the bat.

Rueben: Chen made it too obvious reaching out to Nolan after that shoot-out in front of TO Bishop. She kept their affair secret up until then, and especially when she’s out on the streets, keep it secret even more.

YOUR THOUGHTS

Roz: I’m intrigued and I like how much it gives a glimpse of LA for those who don’t drive through it often.

Leah: I’ll stick around to see where this goes.

Rueben: I want to know if Bradford has always been a dick or did he get worse after his junkie wife went MIA? Is there more to Sgt. Gray disliking Nolan than he led on?
