RECAP Burden of Truth: “Hang Together”

By  |

The tables were starting to turn on the latest episode of Burden of Truth last night, as Billy and Joanna looked deeper into the damage done at the pond near Southvale Farms. But they had to be stealth in their investigation especially given the fact they had to use ground penetrating equipment to determine what caused the damage at the pond.

While they didn’t find anything directly at the pond, the “no-man’s land” between Southvale Farms and the neighboring property was an entirely different story. The ground penetrating equipment literally struck gold, or more specifically, it found 23 barrels in that newly discovered dumpsite. That could be the breakthrough Joanna and Billy needed for their case against Matheson Steel, the local mill.

The next step in their case was to present this new information to the judge, who would have to certify the findings. Luckily for them, the judge was inclined to provide certification, which would get them on step closer. It wasn’t a win, but it certainly was a “checkmark,” as Joanna called it.

Unfortunately, Nate Dawson – the whistleblower from the mill, who provided Joanna with the details about the pond – got scared of not only losing his job and pension but also becoming virtually a pariah in Millwood. The situation was not helped when Ben Matheson, the owner of the mill, approached Nate at work about Joanna and Billy knowing about the dumped barrels [Damn it, he knew about them! How could he not do something about the barrels when his own daughter is so ill?!]

To make matters worse, Ben’s daughter Taylor not only dropped out of the case – on her father’s urgings, of course – but she also collapsed while visiting Molly, and the presumed diagnosis of her feeling even more ill was not good. The doctor wanted to perform a bone marrow biopsy on her, which could mean that she just might have leukemia. [C’mon, Ben, you need to open your mouth about those damn barrels!]

The opposition surprisingly showed up to make an offer to Billy, but the offer would be for his niece Molly only – not the other girls. While that offer was enticing, once Molly learned that she would be the only beneficiary, she declined, saying “we all get paid or none of us do.” Joanna, upon learning that an offer was made, decided to play hardball during their negotiation meeting. While Alan – her former boyfriend and former fellow lawyer at CTS, the big firm run by Joanna’s powerful father David, seemed inclined to agree with a settlement, daddy dearest was going to have none of it. What’s more, he showed up in Millwood to get Joanna off the case due to a technicality that she will more than likely fight against but also to take the case away from Alan.

But things might be turning around, as Dawson – who earlier in the episode told Joanna and Billy that he couldn’t help them – came back to town to provide his witness statement. Maybe things are going to change for the case against the mill?

Were you surprised by the revelation that Taylor’s dad KNEW about the dumped barrels? Were you expecting Dawson to come back to town? What about what happened to poor Owen at the hands of his boss Mercer? Please share your thoughts on the episode in our comments section.

The next new episode, which is the actual penultimate episode, of the debut season of Burden of Truth will air on The CW on Wednesday, September 19 at 8/7c.
